Blue Stars 2014 "Where the Heart Is"

Recommended Posts

From the Blue Stars site:

"Home. A place. A concept. A feeling.

For 50 years people have been calling the Blue Stars home. Thousands of people have crossed our threshold and been welcomed into our family. Members, staff, volunteers, parents, and fans have all placed bricks on the foundation of hard work and excellence we strive for each year.

We think of Home as an extraordinary place, a place with filled with special people and memories. A place in which you can always turn. It is where our heart is. We all have our reasons for being part of the Blue Stars' family, and for returning to that family and special place we know as home year after year.

In 2014 the Blue Stars will explore the idea of home with its production of "Where the Heart Is." The show will explore what it means to build a home, and how that environment shapes and forms the love of a family.

"Where the Heart Is" will feature many of the elements that have become hallmarks of the Blue Stars: creative costuming, character development, and an innovative use of the field in making the production come to life.

The production will draw from a wide variety of different musical selections, including:

The Chairman Dances
John Adams

Homeward Bound
Paul Simon

Home
Drew Pearson, Greg Holden

To Build A Home
The Cinematic Orchestra

Original Music
Richard Saucedo, Ian Grom, John Mapes

Please join us on an exciting and emotional journey as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary in 2014."

Sounds like it'll be a really cool 50th Annviersary show, LOVE anything by John Adams. Really looking forward to this!

I just sung "Home" in my church choir last week. Good choice!

I'm sure it will be a fine drum corps show - Blue Stars have a history of fun and engaging productions. That said...

"The show will explore what it means to build a home, and how that environment shapes and forms the love of a family."

Yeah, good luck with that one.

The Chairman Dances, which is also part of the Opera Nixon in China, is a programmatic piece about the wife of China’s leader Chairman Mao barging into a ceremony and engaging in a dance with a portrait image of her husband which joins her for a Foxtrot. Mao was a very brutal leader who ordered close to two-million of his own people killed during Land Reform and the Campaign to suppress Counterrevolutions; and he was also someone who idolized Linen. Just curious: How does that fit in with the Blue Stars philosophy of, ‘Where the Heart Is’, and especially how ‘that environment shapes and forms the love of a family’?

Listening to it and then reading your post, I get the impression that this music would be used to depict the NEED for a home. The foxtrot/ dance sounds like it's from the point of view of someone watching that weird dance... possibly one of the family members of someone killed by Mao that you mentioned?

That would make sense 'if' it is depicted that way in the Blue Stars show.
