Future use of Sousaphones in DCI

Regiment will use a whole line of white fiberglass Sousaphones with brass trim to visually enhance their uniforms (because it is ‘all’ about the visual; correct Guardling?)

Bluecoats will play the Ohio State Fight Song while spelling out dci and dotting the i with a Sousaphone.

Blue Devils will play the Jaws riff in honor of the original VK using 50 Sousaphones along with the guard screaming “Shark” and the synths creating ocean wave sounds, seagull sounds, and frantic splashing sounds.

The Scouts will do a tribute to Star of Indiana by fielding 80 Sousaphones and, along with the Synths, play the Mother-Ship Conversation music from Close Encounters.

The Cavaliers will pay homage to the music of Sousa with at least 20 Sousaphones marching high-knee step.

SCV will play the music of Wilily Wonka and have the entire 150 performers using Sousaphones to play the Oompa-Loompa song.

Cadets will have the guard pick up Sousaphones but the choreography will be so intense the synths will have to play thunderous goo pretending to produce Sousaphone sounds.

Feel free to add your predictions!!!

Stu -

I'd almost pay to see those examples..Good humor sir..

Too bad nobody could afford the performance rights to the music from Williams..

Besides - unless most of those guys are foreigners, they could do the Big10 step in those fronts.

I saw someone on Facebook looking ridiculous as he usually does trying to defend sousaphones and pointing out that there won't be a whole line of them any anywhere. He has also been on record as flip flopping on the whole woodwind thing. At one time he was strictly opposed to it. Suddenly when he got a job teaching in DCI he flip flopped on that and started promoting the idea of flutes and clarinets as solo instruments on the sidelines. Thank god he ran his course in drum corps as every corps he stayed with fired him after only after a year or two. Guess they knew the goods when they saw one.

So you gotta wonder. If there is not going to be a whole line of sousaphones anywhere..... Why did they pass it? To have them as a solo instrument on the sideline? Yeah that's the ticket. Try selling that!

With electronics in the pit I bet those fiberglass babies if mic'ed and crunched with the appropriate tool would make for a interesting sound effect. :)

A line I heard about plastic sousaphones 25 years ago ran: If it's made by Mattel, it must sound swell.

Bridgemen already used a sousaphone and a clarinet...in 08 at Allentown.

Troopers will use two lines of sousaphones facing each other, 40 yards apart, to fire vollies of plastic cannon balls at each other, while playing "Gary Owen".

Correct. You will probably never see a whole line of them. The idea is for starter corps' that do not own marching tubas. They can borrow from a high school to get started and save a considerable amount of money.

Eklipse D&BC from Kentucky marched a section of sousas at the beginning of the 2003 season. Their contras had not yet arrived so they did what they could for the first few shows!

A sousa section isn't new to DCI... though doesn't mean I like the rule any better...
