World Class Percussion to Watch in 2014?

Recommended Posts

Ok, that makes sense; you're saying that don't have some sort of stellar section or something that really stands out from the pack? I can see that: they're solid, but not over-the-top amazing.

This thread is about 2014 Percussion predictions.I know that it looks like some posters want to prejudge already which drumlines are " solid "and which are " over the top amazing", but it moght be a good idea to wait until all the Percussion marchers get out of their shorts and sneakers and into a uniform before casting 2014 assessments on all these Corps Percussion sections.

Neither myself, nor the poster I replied to, made ANY mentioned of 2014 predictions: we were, in fact, referencing how BAC has been perceived in past years.

Serious question: do you actually read posts you reply to for legit context or do you pick and just a sentence here or there and run with that?!?!

If you're implication is "stay on topic with predictions" (which would seemingly contradict your "lets wait and see their show before we make predictions," which makes me wonder why the H you would bother reading/posting in a predictions thread), then I think that again the context of the conversation has clear thoughts about that. If you read only my post without context, I can see how you would make the mistake in logic and perhaps you should read conversation flow/multiple posts in order to have a stronger grasp of a conversation before you jump in

I'd say the central issue is that posters ( all of us on occasion ) drift off the topic, and this creates problems for posters ( and readers alike). If you read the title of this thread it clearly states" WORLD CLASS PERCUSSION TO WATCH IN 2014 ". I'd say there is not much ambiquity here in this thread topic title to confuse people if we are talking about the past or " 2014 ". It is true, that we quickly went in this thread, and from almost the 1st page to what has occured in the past, and I guess we are all to blame on this. I did not recognize on your recent post that you were still wanting to discuss the past and that your comments on who is solid and who is amazing was still in the realm of the past. I made the mistake of thinking your comment was in reference to the thread title of" 2014 ". but should have immediately realized that nobody has seen nor heard of the 2014 Percussion sections yet because of the now customary annual offseason information blackouts, so that all we have to go on is the past few years of evaluations ( which is problematic in of itself, as the personnels change from year to year in many cases, and Corps sections placements and scores rise or fall depending upon this alone oftentimes ). You have a point on " what the H am I are reading or posting in a prediction thread ?". I suppose the anwser to that is that is what a lot of the posts on here are about. As for " having a stronger grasp " on a topic conversation" before posting, we have posters on here all the time posting on things they never saw nor heard nor were present for. So if the qualification you want to establish in order to comment on here is to have intimate first hand knowledge and experience on something from the past ( including this thread topic )in order to have an intelligent, informative, and knowledgeable conversation about it, we'd quickly begin to hear from mostly just crickets chirping on here, my friend.

I just like drums. :ninja:

For the record, you kind of have to look at previous years trends to predict and decide what you think will happen in the upcoming season, for the record.

True. People debating and arguing about Drum Corps predictions is about as useful as debating and arguing the 2014 Autumn daily weather predictions we might find in the current Farmers Almanac. We should have a prediction free zone here on DCP. Anybody getting worked up on a prediction thread here on DCP anymore should be made to watch tapes of the chunky Tonya Harding chopping wood for a week as their punishment for their silly sweatings on prediction threads.

that's a tough one; the scores aren't just how good your corps is, but how good your immediate competition is. Judging is't just putting a score that fits criteria on the sheets, but also ranking how that caption compares to the competition. BAC just needs to have the designers in place to design a Top 5-caliber program, staff in place to be able to clean that caliber of a book, and members talented enough to pull it off

agreed...no one is saying Boston isn't good....there's better than them. Boston the last few years has, IMO, played well, with a good quality of sound. But the book is safer IMO, than that of their competitors. No serious risks taken. So standout moments that wow the judges and crowd alike. Just a good solid percussion section that enhances the overall package

Guards are about a 3rd the size of Brass lines. Judges judge the visual moves of Brass( and Percussion) Musicians, but Guards carry no musical instruments in which they are similarly judged. If you believe then that each Percussion marcher or each Brass marcher has the same equal weight value on the current DCI scoring sheets as each Guard marcher does on the sheets you are only kidding yourself, as you do not fully understand the value each marcher brings to the table in the scoring and placements. This is because it most assuredly is the Visual that has more weighted value per marcher for the entire unit in competition than the musicianship playing does per marcher ( where upwards of a 3rd of the performers do not play a musical instrument at all in the competition to be judged on ). If you disagree with this assessment, YOUR thinking " is flawed ", not mine, imo. But you are of course entitled to your assessments.. flawed or otherwise.

... now back to the thread topic... " Percussion " and predictions in this section for this summer.........

No. Guards carry rifles, flags and sabers, and in many ways are the icing on the cake to the visual effect moments. Want to make that big impact visually stand out even more? Pop out a loud flag for the ensemble flag moment.

Not only can this help the visual side, it can also help musically when it comes to audio visual coordination. if you pop into the big hit musically and visually for les miz, but yor flag color is orange...not as effective as using red white or blue.
