Studio Recordings - Why don't they exist?

Recommended Posts

I've been in quite a few studios, and never seen one that could accommodate any but one section at a time. The studio cost must be enormous to do a full corps. An outside professional recording makes a LOT more sense.

Well, there's standstill recordings, and then there's studio recordings. These days, they're mostly one in the same as corps get professional recordings done outdoors.

I'm a huge collector of these - I love the "concert hall" feeling of the shows, and getting to hear all of the little nuances that get lost when there's 20,000 screaming fans covering it up.

Most of the concert recordings are either early season releases, or Finals week recordings. There's a scant few that were designed as "studio" sessions (BD/SCV's "State of the Art" immediately comes to mind, as does DCI's "Ornaments in Brass").

I'm working on putting a list together, but it might be easier to crowdsource it on here. :)

Crown tends to do one of each: preseason recordings (done towards the end of move-ins) and end-of-season recordings (done during finals week). We usually did some percussion-only and some brass-only recordings too, either of the whole show or just of certain sections. Recording outside is nice, but there are drawbacks sometimes - I believe you can hear a power-washer in the background of the 2009 recordings, and I think there was baseball team practicing near us another year!

Here's what I know of off the top of my head. These are end-of-season, finished shows (not preseason). Here's hoping other collectors or corps alumni might know of others that are out there as well and add to the list.

The 2004 Tour of Champions DVD is a fantastic example of what can be done with recording drum corps audio in as close to an optimal environment as we're ever going to see. It's fantastic, and they video recorded the whole thing.
