Proper attire required to rehearse?

Recommended Posts

Reading a recent marching member's blog, I learned that the corps was being instructed to keep their shirts on and shorts rolled down during their rehearsals. I assumed it might have been out of respect for the Christian school housing the corps, but the blogger seemed to suggest that the instructions may have come down from DCI, and may be trying to curtail excessively risque exposure.

Has anyone else heard similar reports, and know more about what is behind this?

I haven't heard of it but I think it's stupid. Let people wear what they want. It's hot outside. It's not like they're nude or showing any inappropriate body parts.

It's not unusual. Sometimes there are incidents where the locals complain about the "half naked" kids running around, and if a corps goes back to that school in susbesquent years, they might take that into account and alert their members to dress more appropriately. Beyond that, I know a lot of corps have general regulations about stuff like this, like always wear a shirt in the food line or inside the school or housing site. Once you're outside and on the practice field, you can take off shirts and roll up shorts and such, but the closer you are in proximity to the public (away from the rehearsal), the more careful you sometimes need to be. You just never know who might be offended, and when it comes to making the people responsible for giving you housing happy, you do what you need to do. I taught a corps who got kicked out of housing once because the superintendant of schools stopped to see what was going on and wasn't pleased with what he saw in this regard. It may sound nuts to some people to react so negatively, but it happens.

Since I think pretty much everyone is down in Texas this week, it wouldn't surprise me if that was a local thing. I recall that on 2009, BAC repeatedly got letters of protest at the souvie booth for the guard uniforms that season, and it was during the Denton/Round Rock/San Antonio swing....something about "mocking the downfall of mankind", I seem to recall.

They've run across it before late season if a school is in session already, but that usually pertains to walking through the school rather than actual rehearsal.

Happens all the time, although I agree, it doesnt work that way. Its hard enough to get support from a school to stay there. Just got to bite the bullet and do as they ask..its their territory.

SUCKS but it is what it is

Corps need to adhere to any policies the housing site may have. if that means shirts on and sleeves rolled down, the corps should comply with a smile on it's collective face. Housing is hard enough to come by without doing something so easy to avoid issues.

Yeah, I'm aware of the "shirts on" rules in food lines & in school buildings. It also makes sense to respect the host's rules & expectations, particularly to preserve the opportunity to come back to the same site in the future. No argument there.

I'm also well aware of the '09 BAC complaints - I was touring with them in Texas, proudly wearing my "Core of Temptation" tour shirt. :-D

I guess I'm more interested in whether DCI is issuing this instruction to all corps, and for what reason. It seems to be something that's happened in the last week or so. Maybe it is just a Texas thing.

I think...( If possible ) IF a corps is going to open their rehearsals to the town or school ( usually happens more at evening rehearsals in my experience ) then policy should be cover up a little ) you never know what reaction will be. It really is kind of silly BUT thats just my opinion and putting your best foot forward for many reasons is a good thing.

Remember last year when some local paper posted pics of a corps rehearsing (Bluecoats? Maybe?) and a lot of people were getting angry at the paper for publishing child pornography?

Must have been the "underwear run"... now that's a shocking experience for onlookers.
