Proper attire required to rehearse?

Recommended Posts

Remember last year when some local paper posted pics of a corps rehearsing (Bluecoats? Maybe?) and a lot of people were getting angry at the paper for publishing child pornography?

It was just one crackpot getting angry as I recall.

I know it's shocking to some of us that there are people at there who don't want to see your muffin top, but if covering means holding on to a housing site then you may just have make the terrible, awful sacrifice of keeping a shirt on. Oh, and less chance of skin cancer down the road, so there's that too!

I don't know if DCI has directed the corps, or if it is just a collective thing that corps have noticed and grown via the osmosis of drum corps culture. But some corps have recently begun dictating more rehearsal/housing dress codes in addition to social media photo attire policies. More than one corps this year.

Before ever coming close to Texas.

Not long ago, a girl I knew with years of drum corps and winterguard experience (and hardly prudish) refered to drum corps as "nude marching band", and went on to explain that corps kids roasting on the field start rolling up their already skimpy clothing til it's as tiny as possible and, as she put it, "there's precious little left for the imagination". Plus they'll peel off and change clothes almost anywhere, public or not. And after drum corps they go back to help at a school band camp where the dress code is nothing skimpier than full-length sleeved t-shirts and long baggy shorts. Add to that the wierd trend of ultra modesty/prudishness that has taken over school systems everywhere so that kids aren't required to shower after gym classes or sports practices, and those that choose to do so shower with bathing suits on - even in shower rooms with individual private dressing/shower rooms. Almost ten years ago I remember a WGI regional at Miamisburg HS (of all places!) when HS girls from some other unrelated activity got completely flustered when they discovered women in the locker room showering naked. Natural shyness is understandable but cozening it to the extreme degree that now appears the norm is beyond the pale. Nevertheless, prudent awareness of local norms and doing your best to appear to be following them is always a good policy. Brazenly flaunting them guarantees endless trouble.

I don't think it was a lot, more like 2 or 3, with one particularly loud zealous one making herself look dumber with each comment.

I do wonder, though, given the dangers of skin cancer and continuing advancements in technology, if we couldn't get to a point of having clothes that cover the skin but stay cool enough to wear in high heat and exertion.

Corps need to adhere to any policies the housing site may have. if that means shirts on and sleeves rolled down, the corps should comply with a smile on it's collective face. Housing is hard enough to come by without doing something so easy to avoid issues.

I understand. Rules are rules. But some rules are stupid. This is one of them.

Seems really weird to me. Like school's cross country teams doesn't practice shirtless in short running shorts, or guys play basketball shirtless at school.

It's HOT.....being outside for 12 hours running around.

Plus it is just part of the culture.

I find some of this strange, then again, I'm strange. 6 years of rehearsals and I always had a shirt on, and wore jeans and usually some kinda hat (sometimes my Amish straw hat for a laugh, still have it on my hat rack) to try and limit the inevitable severe burns you'd get BITD when everyone thought it was okay to burn. But yeah, I never wore shorts, ever. I never felt too hot, just soldiered on like the madman I am.

For the record, I'm not Amish, I am a God-fearin' guy, but absolutely no prude or one to tell people what to do in this regard. You want to burn to a crisp and stuff, it's your call. As for a shirt, I didn't want to scare and distract the wimmen-folks with my immaculate six-pack and well-defined abs anyway... :satisfied:

Still got bad second degree burns on the insides of my elbows one year, sweat acted like a lens one day and the bari-carry position just let the sweat burn the heck out of that area. Serious stuff, man.

I'm sure those folks who are complaining have never been to a beach, lake, pool, gone to the movies, or watched reality TV shows. Dam hypocrites!

But for what you listed people have a choice if they go there or not. Why give people another reason to beotch about "outsiders" using school property. In my part of the state if schools are used for anything other than teaching you hear griping about wasting tax money. Doesn't matter if the schools are reimbursed, that's wear and tear on OUR property. And easiest way to get elected to school board is complain about schools wasting money. Doens't matter if there is actual waste or you have a plan to correct it, just B-word.....
