I was going to say, at times narration can be stunning. ...I don't want Cadets to dumb it down for those who don't get it.

As someone finally pointed out in the Nashville thread, in a small way the Cadets' narration is already dumbed down (with the "fear itself" quote placed so as to suggest it has something to do with WWII.) But I don't mean that as a slam. The King's Speech annoyed historians greatly, but is nonetheless a fine film.

(That said, while you're right about narration helping Goodfellas, it didn't help another Scorsese film: The Age of Innocence.)

Casino would have been half the film without the narration. Goodfellas, too. Some of the best movies use narration. And the whole "I'm distracted" argument doesn't hold water. When the narrator is speaking, the music is written specifically to enhace the voice. In other words, there is nothing to be distracted from...you're not missing anything. They are creating a moment through voice that will eventually be enhanced via the brass and drums after.

I just don't know what to say here. IMO, there is absolutely no "Moment through Voice that will eventually be enchanced via the Brass and Drums" in ANY performance. It's ALL gross.

Goodfellas. Yeah, I'd like to use some of the techniques displayed in that movie an all the individuals that are responsible for the current state of the activity.
