andy in 1976 truman crawford did an arrangement of the star spangled banner and was played at every show by all the corps. it was the 200th anniversary of the country so that's why we did it. it was amazing . how did we ever do that........... maybe that's what you remember.

Yes ... there was that in 76, but DCA tried something much earlier in the mid-60's ... guess I'll have to break out the old DCN's ...

At the '65 DCA Championship retreat in Bridgeport, all the corps played "Stars and Stripes" together as they marched towards the stands. Some of them (like Reading) had actually rehearsed this and did a creditable job. The Skyliners were a bit less diligent and this was very obvious from the stands. Mostly, their horn line was making it up, and it showed.

The Sunrisers were not yet deemed worthy to be invited to the DCA club so many of us were just observing. It was a very humorous moment.

Interesting comment ... I never knew there was an exclusion clause in DCA for 65 ... word on the street was that Sun, Brigs, Prince, et al wanted to compete against the Cabs and not be tied to DCA only shows ... was there any possible conflict with Sun's Northeast Circuit commitments/rules? ... I continue to get educated on the finer points of dc history on these historical threads ...

andy i don't know what you are talking about. we joined DCA n 1966 but we still did independant shows. we did theminto the 70's. when you look at the archives you see there are gaps where you don't see cru in a DCA show. but we were competing every week. you didn't need to be in just DCA shows.

Like I said, I learn new things every day ... looking at the score archives, I see where Sky did some non-DCA shows also in 65 ... and the biggest non-DCA show of the early years, the 66 AL Nats ... OUCH!!!!

Here's something else I learned from the score archives for 1965:

Thursday June 17, 1965 Hershey PA

Position Corps Score

1 Reading Buccaneers 84.600

2 Skyliners 82.350

3 Hawthorne Caballeros 78.880

4 Yankee Rebels 77.510

5 Bonnie Scots 71.860

I never knew Sky and the Cabs competed in any shows together in 65 ...

Go figure ...

Membership in DCA was "invitation only".

It was Lefty Mayer who lobbied to get the Sunrisers into the club the second year. He had been helping the corps behind the scenes for a while.

I recall going to clandestine meetings at his home with John Sasso, where Lefty would call show sponsors, urging them to include the Sunrisers.

Lefty had his reasons. He believed that a strong Sunriser corps would actually be a good incentive for the Skyliners. This is similar to the reasoning for the mutual support between Santa Clara and the Blue Devils that developed later.

Going to Lefty's was like having an audience with the pope at the Vatican. He even had impressive artwork, like that great Infinite Company Front portrait of the Skyliners.

Any "audience" with Lefty was papal in nature ... he had a an eloquent, dare I say colorful, simple way of speaking that would make a hooker blush ... you knew he really liked you when he very accurately hit you with the crutch ... I still remember my moment ... OUCH!!!

I have a poem about him somewhere ... maybe I'll post it when I find it ...

But the Legion still has a pageantry contest, I believe. Does anybody know the specifics of that?

Maybe you, Stan, China and I could suit up and win a title by default.
