Hey, everyone! Allentown was ROCKING last night! The gang at Pineville, still in a bit of a 'stupor,' as they drive around trying to find their hotels. Now then, what about tonight? Well . . .

Mainstage Act at Musikfest is All American Rejects.

Sands Casino will still be tight with a buck.

IronPigs are home against Durham Bulls.

and, they'll be throwing rifles and babies at Crum Stadium.

Hmmm, what to do this evening ?

First, an answer to the question "Now, who would name their baseball team IronPigs?"

That's the winner of the 'Name Your Team' contest among Lehigh Valley residents. It is a reference to the time when Bethlehem Steel Company was the world's No.2 steelmaker. Some of the vast acreage now houses Musikfest, the Sands Casino Resort, a college, a TV studio, and a few oher things. IronPigs is a play on 'Pig Iron,' large pours of ingredient, cooled into cylinders of raw steel material to be machined later into actual building products. Like used on the Golden Gate Bridge, World Trade Center, and WW2 battleships.

The wacky name choice proved very profitable, as million$ of pig-themed fan items are sold around the world, mostly out of curiosity, and for humor, we assume. Although, our Pigs were recently AAA baseball's hottest team based on highest annual attendance hovering around 800,000 fans.

Now, let's crank-up FanNetwork & DCP again tonight !

Enjoy!

Three corps seem to have their placements locked in: The Blue Devils *sigh*, The Crossmen, and Pioneer. The respective groupings in second through eleventh will be fun to watch, the group of corps looking to take The Crossmen out of that finals spot, ...and then there's Pioneer (gotta give 'em credit for consistency).

I hope Crossmen keep their finals spot.

When this is your alternate uniform hat, you have it going on:

Iron Pigs games are really fun, and the new stadium they play in is fantastic. If you go on certain nights of the week, you might even catch Cadets/YEA's drumline, the Designated Hitters.

One of Alabama's minor league baseball teams is the Montgomery Biscuits. The logo features what looks more like a stack of pancakes to me.

I still miss the hockey team in Georgia that went by the name Macon Whoopee. I kid you not. Should have got my jersey while they were still around. Their first logo was simply a fig leaf with the name of the team in the middle.

Anyway, back on topic -- the weather for night two still looks a bit dicey. Radar watching will again be the order of the day.

By the way, parking on Chew street was great last night. Plenty of space, and right near the stadium.

The only two questions I still have, are

1. where can I get a decent pirogue, and

2. What the heck is Shoofly pie?

ajlemm, Glad you are having a good time! Pierogies are an unusual potato-filled, dough pouch sort of thing, about 3 inches in diameter. They come in many different varieties and preparations. Each version has its own following. I'd have to think your best bet is to walk through the Allentown Fairgrounds Farmers Market. Never had them there, but there could be 3-4 vendors selling them ready to eat.

I KNOW you will find Shoofly Pie there. It's kind of a Pennsylvania Dutch / Amish / Mennonite thing. Pretty much a soft, crumbly 1" think layer of light colored cake with a 3/4-1" layer of a pudding-like, molasses type layer under that, sitting on the bottom crust. Again, several variations, all good!

And don't forget to stop in the building alongside, Ritz Bar-B-Que, for some famous Butter Brickle Ice Cream. Yikes!

Everything located along Chew Street above Crum Stadium.

1. Allentown is landlocked, You'll be hard-pressed to find any sort of sail-bound pirogue in the area, even on lakes. Perhaps you might have more luck looking for a pierogi, the polish stuffed dumpling. Try Stahley's Cellarette on Hanover Avenue.

2. It's basically a pie made with molasses instead of sugar, and is popular in the Amish areas of PA. It's generally something peddled to tourists in the Lancaster area.

Yes, John, there's a reason folks around here are a little on the "substantial' side!

Just looked at their menu...which is better, with melted butter, or "loaded"?
