Anyone else feel bad for the Cadet's members?

I see two arguments here and they both seem to be coming from black and white positions. But it is the internets so that's what we do. On the one side is they came in third, they're disappointed. On the other side is placement is not what the Cadets are about at all. I think the actual answer is in that gray middle. Yes, Cadets is all about the process, the experience, the learning, the bonding, the hard work and lifelong friendships. But don't kid yourself, Hop is competitive and wants to win too. It drives him. And that's not a bad thing for anybody. So I suspect there are a lot of bittersweet feelings today, happy and sad at the same time. Isn't that great though? Isn't that what makes life worth living? You bust your butt, and sometimes you get there and sometimes you don't. What a great experience and preparation for life. There will be a lot more of that to come in a young person's life.

Yea, I agree 100%. There are also folks that believe it's not ok to be mad or disappointed when things do go your way, or the way you think they are going to go. It's absolutely ok.

Included for the substance of the audio. I apologize in advance for any trauma caused by the video aspect.

I always thought that was a great interview, and I don't think he's changed his views on this at all. He wants to win, and I can absolutely appreciate that, but it's not win or nothing (no corps is like that to my knowledge).

I doubt that anyone in the Cadets' organization thinks that people should feel bad for them.

They got a once in a lifetime competitive operation and joined one of the great fraternities on Earth.

Same reason no one should feel bad for Phantom members, Madison, Boston, Spirit.

These young people and their staffs chose where they committed and made the most of it.

Anyone that doesn't get that doesn't get he activity.

And people can Blooo all they want. Coats were great this year - maybe their best ever.

And their kids had a once in a lifetime opportunity.

But the Cadets' kids? They're Cadets. No one can Bloo that away.

Nor did anyone intend to.

Not at all. Last year when Crown won, BD didn't wine about it, they were over with Crown celebrating with them and congratulating them, even if most of the cheering was geared towards Crown. If any group is a class act, I have to say it is BD. They are out there applauding their peers, not storming out as soon as they can.

Nah. I doubt they felt bad, so why should we? They had a great year and 3rd is hardly anything to sneeze at. (And I'm sure they would've been expecting a big crowd response if Bloo came in 2nd. No surprise there for anyone.)

I "just didn't like it"? Can you think of any corps design package that was widely ridiculed more than this year's flag wavin' narration-and-tarpfest?

I am certain that - to a person - doing "just fine" is far from well enough for the 150 ultra talented Cadets members this year.

The kids may have won a bronze medal, but the staff lost at least a silver medal, possibly gold (no way BD has such a high score if the Cadets actually had a show package that could compete.) And everyone in the corps and 99% of the people in the audience know it too.

Seasons over. No one cares what you think. Go away and don't let a house fall on you. hope we don't hear from you again soon.

Response from George,

Response to the critics ...

I guess there are folks chastising the Cadets and well .. ME .. for the Cadets quick departure from the field Saturday night.

First of all, the agreement the corps have is to depart leaving the field to the champion. There is no saluting or playing in your departure.

That said, we have chosen over the years to maintain our bearing. If we win ... we stand erect. If we lose .. we stand erect. We do this out of respect for our competitors and for our 80 year legacy as Cadets.

We do this every year.

If you use as an example this past evening, I can assure you that placing Third was disappointing. But we have learned to stand still out of respect. Would you have felt we were more human of we had shown our displeasure? Perhaps.

But does the crowd consider the feeling of the corps that gets bumped when there is an upset ??? NO. How about BD when they lost to Phantom a few years ago. The place went crazy. YEA! Phantom. Painful for BD.

We forget there are kids under those uniforms. We think we are at a professional sporting event. Indeed, this is how we market ourselves .... MARCHING MUSIC'S MAJOR LEAGUES !!!!

Gang ... Trust me ... we are very human.

But whether here or in our lives, the Cadets learn that WE control our response to what happens. We need not bark out in anger when things do not go our way, And we need not crumble when the world tosses us a curveball.

Last night was mlld. Third ... Second ... No big deal !!!
BUT ... I admire the Cadets for standing at attention. They are my heroes.

In fact I addressed before the retreat that we may place third. I have been around a few years and I knew the adjudicators, I knew the situation, and I knew what MIGHT happen. And as a teacher and caretaker for kids, I felt I needed to prepare them.
I did not want to talk about third but I did. I felt it my duty.

And it came to pass, we placed third ... and the Cadets stood erect.
And Cadets everywhere cheer in understanding and joy.

As for the departure ...
there is no reason or us to stay on the field. We are not going to move ... this we know. And eventually, folks will cut through our ranks, and the situation is uncomfortable. Corps have other modes of operation and we respect their right to do so, BUT, with our approach, we kind of get in the way of a good party

So ... we go ...
and we celebrate alone OFF STAGE as our performers are taught.
We never want to embarrass others. We never want to show disrespect.

We always want to be Cadets

I hope this helps to explain what we do. You may not agree but ...
at least you might be understanding of our drum corps.

Happy Sunday from a truck stop where we have blown a water hose on the way home
