N.E. Brigand
Madison needs to figure out how to electrify fans with design and performance being top notch. Right now the issue is Madison is trying to appease two beats that are in constant conflict: --re-create the Madison of old; --score well. They don't always go hand in hand, and the talent pool in DCI is far better than it was ten years ago. Yes, and I think part of the problem is that no one can quite describe what the "Madison of old" is. It clearly has nothing to do with repertoire or theme, since Scouts have been successful with a variety of both--although more often than not, with a jazz bent, especially in the last 40 years. But obviously jazz is no obstacle to placing and scoring well.
