2014 Drum Corps Associates World Championships Finals Competition

Recommended Posts

Good point gentlemen. In the 50 years of DCA only once has a corps gone from third place in prelims to first in finals, until last night. That year was 1986 when Bush was third in prelims and took first in finals. In 1986 the Cabs were tied for first in prelims with Steel City and the Cabs dropped to third in finals. Last night, the Bucs went from third in prelims to first in finals and again the Cabs went from first in prelims to third in finals.

My friend Dave Linton was in Bush in 1986 and is on the brass staff of the Bucs. Congratulations Dave!

Oh, and one more curious thing. The two times this happened it occurred on August 31st. Now back to your regular programming.

I will preface this by saying that since i have2 kids in Cabs i am somewhat biased. I have seen enough of them and Bucs this year to still speak with insight though. From my seats on the lower left 40, there was no question about the level of the performances. Simply based on the judging that was seen all season and even the day before, Cabs deserved the highest score, before penalty. Being a visual guy I was just specially surprised by the ensemble visual and colorguard scores. Mr Miller and i clearly did not see the same things. I counted at least 5 times that Bucs brass were out of step. Considering most comments from visual judges today have to include something about colorguard and staging, I suppose it shouldn't be a big surprise.

Having been around the corps most of yesterday, I can say the members clearly felt they laid down the right performance to win the championship. The look on the staff faces immediately after their show, did not match what we saw on the field however. News of the penalty spread very quickly. Considering the circumstances surrounding the member that was called, the penalty was especially hard to take. I was stunned, as I was unaware that this penalty even existed. It is especially ironic that the championship corps had a show based on the theme of breaking through the front sideline. Perhaps someone can explain this rule to me? As we all know scores and placements are only a small part of the life lessons learned in the activity. I am really proud of my girls, and of the whole Cabs organization, for the way they handled themselves last night. Congratulations to all of those who performed over the whole weekend and the season!

Just like 2003.

So transparent that you've hated the Cabs for 25 years or so. Time to get over it already. You don't have to like every corps, but the constant remarks towards one corps is silly now - the 70's, 80's and 90's have been over for quite a while. Welcome to 2014

Oh really ?

Well I was wrong. Tell me what it's like since you're epically familiar with that sensation :)

Sounds like a script from Rod Serling ...

Who cares about the penalty? Did it decide the championship? Does anyone think Cabs would have felt better in second place?

The real story here is what happens when the circuit carefully monitors numbers management during the season to foster competition, carry this practice into the prelims to rank/slot corps from outside the eastern region for the finals, and then just let the boys play in the finals, assign appropriate caption scores, and let the chips fall where they may.

  • The first time a corps lost in prelims and went on to win finals was 1984. Reading won prelims with a 91.20 and Hawthorne won finals with 92.40

The next time it happened was 1986. Hawthorne won prelims with an 89.65 and Bush won finals with a 92.45

In 1988 Sun won prelims outright with a 94.00. Then Bush and Sun tied with a 96.36. This is an interesting one, as the winner of preliminaries did go on to win a championship

It didn't happen again until 1996 When Hawthorne won prelims with a 95.40 and the Westshoremen went on to take finals with a 96.90

The following year in 1997 Syracuse won prelims outright with a 96.00. Finals produced a tie between Empire and Syracuse with a 96.30. (Similar to what happened in 1988)

And finally, 2014. Hawthorne took prelims with a 96.85 and Reading took finals with a 97.55
