How hard is it to make the Oregon Crusaders

Recommended Posts

I'm 15 and about to audition for my first corps the Oregon Crusaders on trumpet, and was wondering, what should I expect at the audition and how hard is it to make the corps?

I've been involved in auditions as well as directing some people toward different places. The best information you can get will be right from the source. Either speak to a member if you can but for sure talk to a staff person at OC . They will I'm sure tell you not only what to expect BUT what they expect. Good Luck

Get all the info you can about technique, both musically and visually. Come with a great attitdue, be teachable, and if you get a call back, be better than you were the first time. If you are travelling from far away, have a schedule of travel plans for future camps, etc. should you make the corps, to show the staff how serious/prepared you are about doing this activity.

Luv4Corps here has a son who just aged out of OC. You might search for her and PM her but, if she's online, I'm sure she'll see your thread and answer you.

That said, the very best thing to do is contact the corps directly. No corps is easy, of course, but I'd bet they give you the straight scoop specifically related to the competition in the trumpet line.

With OC's recent advancements in placement and ascendancy to the big leagues, I'd imagine tryouts have taken a significant jump up in competition in recent years.

Below is the link to their audition page. It is the first step to becoming an Oregon Crusader! I think communicating with the organization directly is your best bet. Battery positions are extremely competitive of course. Brass is a little less so, although OC is getting talent interest from all over the country now. I was hoping a member or former member would answer on here. Maybe one still will, if I can get my son on the phone ;) That would be a nice first hand account for you. Best of luck!

There is an excellent open class corps in the region called the Columbians. You might want to consider this corps too.

The best thing you can do is talk to current members and talk to the staff. I find that the best musician does not always make the corps. Sometimes, drive, motivation and a desire, lead to making the corps. Also, the only way to find out is to go audition. Remember your part of a team.

Leave any ego at home. OC is a solid corps that is on the rise. It is becoming more and more chalenging to make OC, but it your motiveated and work hard at auditions and do what they ask, you have a good shot.
