DCA Predictions for 2015

Recommended Posts

A lot of corps have gone into stealth mode on here for a lot of reasons:

post something that's seen as bragging and the critics aka wolves froth at the mouth and jump

also some corps in the past talked a great game here, didn't pan out on the field, and then members got defensive and the wolves pounced.

licensing may be an issue

and #1, DCP has been bypassed by social media for pretty much everyone

Truth. A corps can more carefully manage their message on FB, communicate to a more tailored audience, etc.

Really- you can write great copy about what you want to do, but anything more than "We've been working very hard at it, we've been having what we viewed as positive rehearsals, and we hope you enjoy our product when you see it on the field!" can get into that overhype area. So many old timers have seen so much of the overhype, even BITD from scholastic groups and corps, that it's easy to get critical of it.

Most of the press releases here over the past 2-3 seasons are within those guidelines. People learned, or in most of the cases of them I can think of, were always smart to start with.

I saw all the mini corps live this year (fyi, video of all the performances are online). Star United was much more effective on the stage in the convention center Saturday than they were in their encore on the field Sunday. They weren't bad on field, just less impressive when juxtaposed with all the field corps who are larger and cover much more space with their drill. (Also, there were a few mistakes in the encore performance that were not present when they competed.) In competition indoors, Star United, Ghost Riders, and Opus 7/Renegades especially, with three rather different styles, were each a huge hit with the audience, as they should have been, and all eleven mini corps got warm applause--although apart from Star and Ghost, groups that performed after Renegades had to compete with the slowly growing sound of chatter from the bar areas. And the show was just about as long as it should be: I would limit the number of competitors to twelve at most. Would people have paid to see the show? I have no idea.

Revisiting this thread, I was reminded of the sentence I've bolded here. What's up with that? Who talks through a performance that's obviously going on in the same room where you are?

These are some hopeful things that would be good to see in 2015. Nothing is official from a corps or from a knowledgeable source.

1. Renegades come back to DCA Finals. Sometimes evil is good.

2. Thunder Brigade and Shenandoah sound both get the #'s needed for class A and have a good season of MD/ VA border battles.

3 Alliance, Atlanta CV and Carolina Gold all have full-sized corps and have a real Southern Shoot Out in Atlanta a week before Finals.

4. Glassmen show up in DCA either as mini corp, alumni or class A

5, Sixteen corps (including Kidsgrove and Renegades) battle for ten Open Class Final spots.

6. C2 has its color guard ready to go in June.

Well someone had to get this thread started.

1. Sigh.

2. Sigh.

3. Sigh.

4. Has there been any news on who this year's mini corps will be?

5. Sigh.

6. Here's hoping!

A lot of corps have gone into stealth mode on here for a lot of reasons:

The main reason is this site is now irrelevant. The sum total of all the people participating in the conversations in the DCA threads amount to maybe a dozen people, all talking amongst themselves.

It no longer reflects the fan base of the DCA activity. (If it does, DCA is in seriously dire straits.)

OK, so where are all of DCA's fans posting online these days? I'd like to know what they have to say.

FB for the most part.

I realize that DCP finally changed its policy on media sharing but IMHO it came too late.

People were hungry for media sharing and they were finding them WITHOUT THE help of DCP. So,why go to to DCP if it was no help?

FB generates a broader range of fans . You pretty much have the same ole people, posting here posting petty much the same ole rstuff. On FB you might hear someone who marched from the 60"70 80s ,90 or 2000 chime in on a thread that would never think to throw their two cents in over here. And a lot of the times their perspective and ideas are fresh and out of the box. Not stale and regurgitated.

DCP is not irrelevant. Obviously the traffic isn't as high as it was before the social media boom, but it still provides a topic-driven threaded forum that no social media platform does. Traffic in the DCA forums will pick up as the season starts. You only have to go as far as to look at the user statistics for show weekends to see this is true.

I see very little DCA chatter on Facebook

Yea, 95+% of what's on Facebook is either DCA or corps PR, or members posting stuff from their corps (both are legitimate content). There's next to no real discussion of shows or corps.
