Please Respect Private Videos

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

This has been discussed before, but it seems like some people need constant reminders about respecting video posting requests.

Earlier this season, there was an incident on DCP where someone got videos removed from an alumni page by sharing them here, though he was unaware of the request not to share them.

Just today, another corps alumni group on Facebook had to remove all of it's videos after somebody helped a poster find a work-around to the "no-share" settings, and they shared a video with the general public.

Folks, many people still don't understand that not everything on the internet is free. Corps alumni love to share memories about when they marched, and keep up with how their beloved corps are doing. But those performances are copyrighted, or may be things that the corps administration does not want the public to see yet. If the videos start getting spread around the internet, they get removed and the fun is ruined for everyone.

Please, PLEASE, double-check any video before you share it. Make sure that you are not violating the requests of a page owner before you post it. And don't make the already hard copyright situation worse for DCI by sharing copyrighted videos.

The drum corps community thanks you for your cooperation :)

End of rant. :soapbox:

TL;DR: Please help us commit copyright infringement without being caught. Thanks!

Copyrighted performances are one thing, but theres also a thing where some alumni get permission from the corps to post rehearsal videos, especially early season, as long as the videos remain within the alumni circle only. When people violate that request, the relationship with the corps admin is broken, and the alumni lose that connection to the current corps members.

Yeah, permission from the corps is not permission to violate copyright. The music is the music. If you see something, enjoy it because it probably is illegal and will disappear soon.

I agree with you on this one...but this is a HUGE problem worldwide not just with the drum corps community...I respect your request...but at the same know that not everyone is going to follow it...if you look at generation Z for that matter...they are the first fully global generation and are extensively connected and shaped by their peers...there is no doubt in my mind about it...this just compounds the issue IMO...

edit: generation z for example has twice as many or more friends on Facebook for example than the other generations etc.

Even friends who aren't their "friends"....

I agree with your sentiments, but you're pissing up a rope with this one my friend. If it's on the internet, it's going to get out. That's just the world we live in. If one doesn't want it to get out, don't post it in the first place.

The OP is a TL:DR rant that pretty much says "Please enable us to infringe copyright, but help us also police anyone else's use of my pirated material, it's somehow justified"

If the alumni or corps REALLY didn't want videos to spread they shouldnt have put them on Facebook. Blame goes to the people who posted the private video not those that shared it. It's just irresponsible to expect that videos like that won't be shared because they are "private". That doesn't mean anything on the Internet.
