MADISON SCOUTS 2016

Recommended Posts

We weren't doing a literal interpretation of the theme. We were playing the tunes and kicking ### and not trying to tell a story.

Right, exactly...no theme. And I agree, you were kicking A## with that show....

But it looked confusing for the guard to be in a costume that made me think of 1940s

gangsters...that's a theme where there isn't supposed to be one, and it can make a viewer ask, why?

I was sitting next to someone early season that year who did ask "if the music is from JCSS, why is Al Capone's hit squad on the field".

Scott should have let Chad Duggan have more say in the costuming that season, like he did 94-97. I thought Scott was a brilliant

Director, but sometimes he made unilateral decisions (and as a non-creative person) when he should have trusted his brilliant designers more.

It was not Scott's vision on costuming. Chad had also pretty much taken a break from the corps after the 98 season.

Yes!!! PLEASE retain the current uniform....and for all that is holy, make the guard costumes fit the show theme (I know you will Chad!)

I know that 1999 wasn't a literal interpretation of JCSS, but why did the guard look like Al Capone's hit squad?

(Stewart never gave me a valid explanation for that one)

Purple Gang maybe?

I swore I thought I remember Scott telling me that it was his idea...maybe he was taking some credit for it in the conversation.

Who did come up with it? I would be interested to know.

I read a couple other posts and one guy had pics from different productions of JCSS and there are some "gang" looking

shots of Judas, so maybe I'm completely out to lunch and someone on staff was hinting toward one of those looks.

The original film version of JCS by Norman Jewison had a lot of oddball aspects. For one thing, he had machine guns and army tanks and jet fighters, etc.

Later versions of the show on stage (sadly IMO) took a lot from the film. The most recent version I saw in NY a few years back had weird things like that, as well as cameras and other modern components, mixed in with the 2000-year-old costuming/sets.

There ya go again, highlighting the design(ers) rather than the performers.
