Corps Necklace

Recommended Posts

On tradition night at the end of spring training, Pioneer members get a necklace with a green shamrock shaped dog tag. Engraved on one side is "Pioneer Corps" and the corps motto "Better Every Day". Engraved on the other side is their member number.

They also get a colored washer for each year they march, but the colors usually wear off by the end of the season from the sweat.

Members will sometimes put little section charms or momentos on their necklace too. I know someone who found a pop tab on the field at their favorite rehearsal site and put it on their necklace.

Alumni will often ask members to field their old necklaces-sometimes for one performance, sometimes for the entire season. It's a cool way to keep old members with us, even if they can't physically march with us anymore.

The Bluecoats give a blue shoelace to all rookies and near the end of the season they are given a silver dipped penny stamped in the year that they marched that has a hole drilled in it. The member is to take a link from their helmet (not sure how that worked out this year) and use it to link the penny to the shoelace. Each member gets a new penny each year that they march... for vets on their 5th year, they get a nickle stamped in the year that they are marching.

I don't believe that it has been a tradition since the beginning... but it has been going on for 20 or more years.

Coin (British West-African 1/10th of a penny): symbolizes membership.

White bead: Rookie bead. Symbolizes a member’s first summer. Goes to the right of the coin - with the Star of David facing the bead.

(Members of the 2014 Blue Stars also have a special 50th anniversary coin - a 50 yen piece that goes to the right of that year’s bead, the 50 facing the bead; it’s in a different place for each member depending on how many years they marched)

Blue bead(s): Represents each subsequent year as a member. Goes to the left of the coin.

Red bead: Represents the ageout year. This bead goes to the left of all other parts of the necklace so that the ageout year is closest to the heart.

Spirit has a (recent?) tradition of "fielding the Deltas". Alumni will loan their deltas to the Corps and they are usually assigned to the current members at the Atlanta show. The members wear them until Finals.

Crown necklace just appeared on my Facebook feed. Not sure what any of it means though.

Each year, Crown members get a new bead for their necklace, usually related to the show. Such as: a green bead for The Grass Is Always Greener or a black star bead for Rach Star.

Age outs get a silver crown at the Corps banquet after Finals.

not all corps have necklaces. Some like Cadets bequest the buckle. Sections within the corps sometimes do their own thing for solidarity.

Yep. Crown members also usually get uniform items -- plumes/feathers, the mirrored Crown logo, the gauntlets from the Rach Star show, etc.

I was hoping the PC guard would get to keep their sledgehammers, but I think the hammers were auctioned off for a fundraiser.

Surprised no one has mentioned the cavies gears. SOA members and staff get deltas with the year on it. The cymbal line has deltas made from real cymbals. Phantom has dog tags. SOA also has a program where alumni let current members "field their deltas."

SCV does the thing where age outs have an all green plume and let's them keep their SCV stars, right?

Madison used to not do anything. But in the past several years, they've brought the alumni into the picture with their NAIL program. Never Alone In Life. Current members in their first season get an iron NAIL that is on a necklace. That nail has the name of a sponsoring and active alumni on it. This connects the past with the current.

Don't wear that when you're going through TSA. They seized my son's in 2007 at LAX. He'd just aged out of Scouts and there went his nail. He got another one years later. Edited by Terri Schehr
