Crown Percussion

Recommended Posts

Crown's program is improving - and pretty rapidly.

If they build on last year they should be in great shape this year

I agree with others that some of the "issue" is that we have 4 monster programs right now - SCV, BD, Cadets & Bluecoats, getting passed 1 or more of them is TOUGH

Doesn't matter though - if they can cut the spread a bit more this year their other strong captions will keep them in the medal rounds most likely - with a real shot at winning #2

spot on! the top of the heap is full of good stuff...and you have some corps just outside of that grouping that are also #### good!

I've grown weary of people misunderstanding how competitive percussion is at the top. Just because Crown placed fifth it doesn't mean they suck. It means they are competing against the cream of the crop-the best of the best, and they were less than a point behind BD last season. They were GREAT! Be happy for them!

BD's Percussion finished an uncharacteristic 5th.... FIFTH... at Finals in 2008 however. Heck, even with a 5th place in Drums, BD only lost the 2008 Championships by the tiniest margin in DCI history... less than tenth of a point.

What are the chances a Corps could win a modern day DCI Title under the current judging sheets with a non medal placement in Guard ? Or in GE Visual ? If you reply.... " zero chance", you are veddy, veddy smart about these things, imo.

That same 2008, Phantom finished fourth in Guard. And Visual Ensemble.

Crown is solid across the board especially in the important areas of GE and Guard. Percussion is no longer a drag on them. So the important question is will the design be at the level of 2015 or 2014?

Mathematically about the same, since the visual captions get the same weight as the percussion caption in terms of their portion of the overall score. The difference lies in the fact that the music sheets are so specialized. A great color guard will have a lot of effect on the visual analysis and visual ensemble sheets, whereas percussion has very little effect on the music analysis sheet and zero effect on the brass sheet (reference Crown's ability to win Music analysis consistently the last few years, with a 5th place or lower percussion program). A GE judge is also considerably less likely to notice great vs bad percussion (relatively of course, we're splitting hairs at that level) and allow it to affect his number. Essentially, guard and visual are more integrated into other sheets, and as such, have more pull on the overall result. That's why you're less likely to see a corps with a 5th or 6th place guard winning a championship. Its certainly possible, but much less likely.

Drum and Bugle Corps?

Should be called Brass and Guard Corps (drums thrown in for good measure)

Or guard and props corps. Great brass apparently doesn't mean much either with this judging system.

Oh, Tobias, please don't get me started about how GE and Visual are weighted far too much. LOL! I thought this was DRUM corps not Aesthetics Are Everything Musicianship is Overrated corps. :silly:
