2015 vs. 2016 - Daily Year over Year Comparisons

Recommended Posts

I don't know if the umps actually do this, in order increase higher scoring games... but who knows.

Speaking of Baseball's comparison to DCI placements, man wouldn't we love to see the excitement that their numbers of different teams that win it all compared to DCI ?

Despite the fact that MLB essentially has no team payroll cap, there is double the level of parity in Major League Baseball compared to DCI . Since 2000, 10 different teams have won the Title..... or fully a third of all competitors ( 30 ). By contrast, DCI has had only 5 teams ( half that of MLB ) that have won a Title in this same 15 year time period. DCI is resigned to a lack of excitement that parity in the competition brings in the future too, as its policies implemented will never permit such a similar future parity, imo.

Do we have 30 world class corps filled with 150 kids? No. So of course that level of parity is going to be difficult to reach. When so much talent is being accumulated at the top, and with some corps marching less than a full corps, it's easy to see the lack of parity compared to a sport like baseball

True. This does explain why DCI has less parity than just about any other amateur youth competitive endeavor we could possibly think of. It also inconceivable that any other amateur youth sports league would ever consider running their operation the way DCI runs their operation. They absolutely have no use for this model. All of them. And these amateur youth sport leagues, many of whom are growing in participants, teams, fan bases, etc won't ever be adopting the DCI model in their future either.

July 9, 2016 -- July 4, 2015

2016 - Heat Wave debuts at #40. Biggest positive movement in score from Colt Cadets (+5.05) takes them from #37 to #32. Biggest negative movement in score from Phantom Regiment (-0.85) takes them from #5 to #7. Colt Cadets also had the biggest positive change in position (+5) to #32 while Spartans had the biggest negative change in position (-4) from #21 to #25 while not performing. This date showed almost all World Class corps in competition. Only the Madison Scouts were out, who had two nights off before returning to action tonight at home in Madison, WI. All World Class corps will not perform on the same night until Saturday, July 30 at DCI Atlanta Southeastern Championship. We'll be close the Saturday before however Pioneer is not scheduled to appear at the DCI Southwestern Championship.

2015 - Only a few corps performed on 4th of July. Biggest positive movement in score from Troopers (+2.00) moved them up one spot to their eventual finishing position of #13. The smallest positive movement in score was from The Cadets (+0.50), which was enough to maintain their #2 position.

Year over Year - Currently the corps showing the greatest potential increase of position from 2015 to 2016 is Gold, currently positioned at #28 after finishing last year at #34. The corps showing the greatest potential decrease of position is Genesis, currently positioned at #33 after finishing last year at #22. They have not performed since July 5 and will look to change that statistic when they return to action tonight in Madison, WI.

You know what I would find fascinating? A chart that shows the average age of each corps over the years. I suspect you will see an amazing correlation between average age and average annual finish.

The only thing that will bring faster change to competitiveness is more Mm ability across the board. With such a clearly limited pool of available elite talent, we will continue to see the more experienced, and therefore the more passionate and talented, marching members graduate to corps that historically have the best shot at medaling. It is why all major sports leagues have some kind of system to ensure some degree of competitiveness from top to bottom. But in an activity like DCI, which is not a franchise and requires participants to pay to participate, the only solution is to increase marching membership.

As an aside, one obvious area DCI can impact this is finding ways to attract minorities to the activity. I am sure this is not a new idea, but all you have to do is look at the music industry over the last century to see how many of the most talented artists are not white.

Drum Corps used to have a much bigger presence in the inner cities. Its lost that over the last several decades. ( the Boston Crusaders is a Corps that has within the last 3 years enacted some commendable initiatives to make some outreach here... but it will take time ). Music programs & marching band programs in many of the inner cities are really weak, and in some cases have regrettably been dropped altogether by the locals there . As for other " minorities ", Drum Corps seems to have more women matching than ever before, but they are essentially absent from many leadership roles within DCI and within the judging ranks, and within the leadership roles of many the Corps themselves. There appears to my eyes to be a decent percentages of Asian- Americans, and Hispanic- Americans marching in Corps. Caucasian- Americans will be the " minority " population in the US during the lifetime of most of the younger DCP'ers, so it would behoove DCI to do more of an outreach to what will soon become the majority of people demographically in the US. DCI biggest activity growth the last decade has been in non North American Countries. Not Canada, not the US... but in the Far East, Europe, South America. I would expect to see solid and accelerated growth in DCI to continue in these areas over the coming years.
