Simply, BD 2014 was more than 2 points better than the next corps. Their score does not indicate the perfection level of their show or it's execution, it's an indication of just how much better they were than every other corps that year

I agree I was just doing a terrible job of saying that.

What would be the effect of simply eliminating score caps during the championships? This would mean a judge could score over 20 in a caption, and over 100, but only for the last show of the year.

Changing the measuring stick at the final competition?  Bad idea. Very unfair to corps that aren't in the last show, to earlier performers, and to everyone who's competed all season on one uniform scale. Judges just need to manage their numbers. Otherwise have no upper limit all season.

Exactly. I understand that is challenging, but they need to.

You are exactly on - the judges need to manage their numbers.  We are told time and time again, that when you judge, you must keep in mind the number of groups that follow.  It's a must, which is why, as a judge you need to be aware of what groups are scoring, especially in what you are judging.  Keeping track of those things are a must in any organization that judges in a circuit of any kind and especially for championships that may have a draw of some kind in the finals (where you pull numbers out of a hat).

That was done in local Mass. circuit in the 70's.  it was a dumb idea then and still would be.  With a point score of 115, the we can't figure this out,  judging community drum and bugle corps.  Oy,  work with 100.

Very interesting that when 99.15 was the measuring stick, or when BD popped a 99.05 in 2009, never recalled hearing about judges needing to manage their numbers etc. As soon as BD demolished that record, now it's an issue. I wonder if we kept 99.65 but gave that score to Crown, willing to bet this wouldn't be an issue.

I get it.   But even from someone who was totally vested with the Bluecoats in that year, '14 for BD an incredible show - worthy of the number.    I think any corps, given the close proximity to a "perfect" overall score, would probably have raised eyebrows.  But,   If BD achieves a similar number this year, the fan reception would be different.  Like it or not, the era of BD total inhialiation on oppornents is past.   In recent years, Crown and Bloo have taken turns being at the top of the mountain.  The competitive landscape has changed for the better.

Agreed. I don't see BD coming close to reproducing their 2014 score. This show is not at that same level, neither in design nor performance. 2014 was an undeniable corps, whereas I think this season has 2-3 worthy challengers below them who could possibly catch them in the coming weeks. The winning show will likely not break 99 this season. 2014 BD will remain a high mark for many years to come..

Plausible but BDB and VC will be peppered in somewhere between OC, Spirit & PC.  I say this knowing nothing about the open class shows!
