Fran Haring
Happened all the time back in the primordial soup era pre-DCI (read "my era" ) as well as now. A large portion of the Garfield drumline quit after 1971 when George Tuthill, our amazing instructor, was let go. 2 of 4 snares, all three tri-toms and 2 of 4 timpani. all went to the Cabs, where George was teaching as well. I decided not to join the Cabs (was one of the tri-toms), so rejoined Garfield, but I played baritone in support of George. I mean...who would EVER want to play in a drumline taught by.....Fred Sanford! And the Cabs certainly benefited from having those drummers, and George, come on board for 1972. George writing the book and running the percussion program... and Jack Pratt as the in-house cleanup guy... were a match made in heaven for the Caballeros. My brother-in-law (OK... in '72 he was still my future brother-in-law...LOL) marched in Cabs' drum line (bass drum) in '72 and '73. Two great years for that corps.

When I taught the King's Regiment in 77 (merger of the Wayne Monarchs and Greenwood Lake Lakers in mid-76), Jack was our main battery guy. I wrote the percussion book and focused on mallets and timpani. He was a very interesting guy. He had an amazing comic book collection long before it became a "thing". Original Batman appearance, Superman, etc.... His other great collection was classical music albums. Ask him for a recording of, say, New World, and he'd ask by which orchestra and which conductor. Our second percussion feature was a short 6/8 piece by Vaughan Williams from an orchestral suite he wrote....the name of which I forget. It was Jack's suggestion. I wrote it for brass quartet and percussion. He was quite a character, but a great guy and a marvelous instructor.

I think the Caballeros Alumni corps' drum line still does some of Jack's warmup/endurance exercises to this day. Hey... if it isn't broken, don't fix it, right?
Sandonovan
Well, now is the time of year where I shall go preform a blood sacrifice in hopes that the Cadets have a good design this year (not to knock past years, but needs to be... Better)... Anyone have good voodoo suggestions to increase the likelihood?

xandandl
Go down to New Orleans and find yourself a voodoo queen. Several alum Cadets DMs are doing great work in NOLA chasing out the negative spirits of Katrina with better housing, good nutrition program, and special programs in reading and education. Another Cadet alum, we know him on DCP as Euponitone, adds to the housing efforts with Habitat for Humanity volunteer work. What's that line from Blazing Saddles about no one does voodoo like you do????
2000Cadet
"Be careful what you wish for" a phrase befitting the time of current. This thread is incredibly boring for December. I'm starting to regret saying Cadets should shut up until June. However, Shut up until June. Edited December 19, 2016 by 2000Cadet

They're very excited about it!
