They deserve respect as our nations oldest and highest rewarded. MikeRapp Posted November 9, 2016 Share Posted November 9, 2016 I know some here are getting very little out of this show. I am one of those as well. However, my daughter is enjoying it a little bit. She recently turned 14 and is interested in DC guard in the future. She just joined her HS Band color guard and is doing OK for having zero experience. The Clash is giving her a little insight to DC summer life she otherwise would have no knowledge of. So far nothing has scared her off, but neither Cadets or BD is grabbing her interest. She has always liked Phantom and Boston. So who knows where she'll go with this. For me, I can't put my finger on what's missing but someone I think described it well a few posts ago...there's no there, there. It feels like the production crew just didn't really understand why this activity is so popular. Their entire diatribe of "two teams" just isn't accurate. If anyone is from marching band, experience with marching band doesn't equate for a show about drum corps. Even experience with competitive marching band doesn't equate because the aspect this program should be conveying, IMO, is the program development aspect, required for a competitive touring drum corps. Touring makes a difference. My interest (rather than my daughter's) would be to see program changes and how/why a program evolves throughout the season (up close and personal) and how the program is taught and cleaned. I get the impression that they used the word "team" so that a person who doesn't follow Drum Corps or marching bands can understand the competition concept. Most people in the general public don't know much,if anything, about drum corps or marching band,including that there are competitions. It appears as though the show was sold based on a "two teams competing for the prize" idea, which is what many if not most reality TV shows are based around. In theory, it made sense, but in practice, not so much. The motivations of the kids and the instructors is quite different than that, as those of you who marched know so well. I do think there's a great show in there somewhere, but the show right now seems to not really be able to get traction on anything they are focusing on.
