So, it's December 13 and there is absolutely 0 info about what corps are planning to do (Outside of Pioneer...thanks Pioneer) for the 2017 season? Yawn....

From a reliable source (and it was basically an aside), Cadets are rumored to be looking at Bernstein's Mass. How retro. If there's anything to it, the chorale stuff makes sense.

They can look all they want, but getting performance rights from the Bernstein estate is a whole different matter. Those involved with protecting his legacy are pretty picky about granting rights, and while the drum corps/marching band community has been blamed for this on this site, I think it's pretty much across the board.

...which would also make sense considering that a Cadet insider or 2 on here have talked about them playing "something" if they can get the rights to it.

._.

While this is true, it is not the rule. Much of the disdain came from the Troopers use of West Side Story in 2009, as well as countless marching bands that have butchered LB's music over the years.

That said, they do have a rather rigorous process to use the maestro's music, they do still allow it. One main factor is that they do not want bits and pieces just meshed together without continuity. They also require organizations to submit scores before permission is granted.

Also, they are very specific in pointing out WSS, as that seems to be the work they are most upset about its uses, so obtaining the "Mass" would/will be at least slightly easier.

On the idea of them using it though, this would certainly be a rumor I would be excited about. When Cadets have used "Mass" in the past, I have enjoyed it, and I believe with the structure and rules in place in DCI now, I think it would be wonderful!

I was planning on using "Simple Song" as my vocal audition... I don't know if I should rethink that or definitely use it, but either way it got a lot scarier! :ninja: haha

I wouldn't suggest it. It's a great piece of music, but if they are in fact using "Mass," might not said the signals you're hoping to.

Good luck on the audition, btw.
