Bridgemen always said that because they weren't DCI finalists in 1974 or 1975, they were not privy to all of the DCI age requirements, thus the '77 mess. They were found out at Whitewater, two weeks before the DCI Championship, yet DCI let them compete in all the shows on the way to Colorado. (I was at Whitewater, as well as Boulder/Denver.) I always thought DCI really gave Bridgemen a raw deal by using them in this manner, since they were easily a top-3 draw in '77, and without them in the lineup the Iowa and Nebraska shows would not have been half as attractive to the paying public. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that DCI initially decided when the '77 DCI Championships rolled around that the Bridgemen were informed they would not be allowed on the field to perform and compete. Didn't the Bridgemen then have to go to court and have a judge grant them an injunction, which would allow them to perform their show ? DCI did disqualify them however ( which is their legal right ). It was a long time ago, so I'm not entirely sure on Bridgemen having to go to court and get a judge's injunction. Is my memory accurate on this.. Those of us sitting in the stands at Boulder were surprised to hear Brandt Crocker announce the whole legal thing. For awhile we weren't sure they were going to be allowed to perform.
