Why Blue Devils should win DCI 2017

Recommended Posts

BD should win because they enter the field in a very professional manner and they have a cool ballad. What more do you need? :bluedevil::22_stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I'm sure you can make the argument.  This year has shown that many arguments can be made for many things.  Their formula is not tired, it got hooked to an unmovable object and a show they couldn't clean.  I love Cavies, Blue Devilsand Crown, but Bluecoats should have and did win last year.  If you want formulas, you can look at BD. Great brass, percussion and guard, very average visual show, which was and has been a formula of theirs for many years.  It's clean as all get out and the brass plays incredibly well, but the simplicity of the visual show is an amazing thing, and congrats to them for finding the formula that worked very well in the past and will win them the title this year.

Not criticizing your particular point, which was fair and not negative at all, so much as I'm responding to the word "formula" when it comes to BD:

BD of late is no more formulaic than any other corps in its stride, really.

You can compare them to a similarly championship-dominant corps, like the Cavaliers during their high period, but recognizable design tics were equally apparent for, say, SCV from 97-00. This is simply evidence of designers growing secure in a style that works. Or, TLDR: it's called Style.

Corps like Crown and Cadets, meanwhile, have done outright *sequels* to some of their most successful shows (so did Madison, with "Drum corps fan's dream," in the 90s.) So the "formula" charge has always struck me as a little unfair. Isn't repetition, and doubling down on what makes BD BD (or Crown Crown, or...) part of the appeal of a corps? I really just don't get the argument.

There's also the simple fact that when I watch three recent BD shows at random—reRite of Spring, Felliniesque, and this year, for example—what mostly stand out are their vast creative differences, not their similarities. I can absolutely tell they're the same corps, but man are these shows going for different effects, different emotions, different challenges for the audience. The "formula" charge just feels like an excuse not to notice.

Cool. To each their own.

i thought BD's show last year was a masterwork, and that it may have been one of their greatest ever.

My point was that Bloo probably won because of the hype that surrounded them. That is the same hype that is completely missing for them this year.  Hence, their presumable fourth place finish.

I perceived more hype this year than last for Bloo.

I also find d BDs show WAY better than last year.

Actually I find this year in general to be way better

Two thoughts:

1) Would really be a shame if we wasted this topic relitigating the 2016 championships like it's the 2016 election, as that's not what this topic was asking for. I don't love Bloo's 2016 show, but I'm not sure it helps to see it getting ragged on here.

2) We won't know who deserves to win until we see them perform on Finals night.

I think BD is very good, almost too good for others to compete against. But as an old school corps person I think BD always wins when you watch the feet. Inhumanly clean.

Sure, but when others compare it to the twelve at SCV, 40 > 12. :)

Again, they are the only brass playing. SCV's 12 is playing OVER their whole hornline, which is what I take issue with :)

Since when do the judges give a rat's butt about hype?

They are human. It is just as easy for them to get caught up "in the moment" as it is for the fan base. Last year, Bloo's hype carried them.

Go back and revisit the show. It was not the best of the bunch. BD and Crown both had better design and execution if you analyze the shows based on the sheets. The judges got caught up in the hype of Bloo winning a title. Bloo won.

They should've taken third.

Ask the 1988 Devils if the case is closed...

Biggest hose job in DCI history.

No announcement of scores and a random draw for finals. BD thought it was in the bag, but had no way of knowing that they were trailing.
