12th to 6th in a year?  HELL YES!  :)  Higher than 6th in 2018?  I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT!  However, the top 5 are so solidified (and adding Cavies back into this mix) makes it ever so much ore challenging for the designers AND the music writers!   I say they stay 6th ..... which is NO SMALL task either!  It's tough competition out there and their staff knows it -- they also know what they CAN do as a collective group!  "I" think their 2018 show may already be tentatively outlined... but, we shall see won't we after Thanksgiving!

The new staff should be around for several years and they probably can't wait to get a start on next years show.  I feel this years auditions will be interesting since there were not a lot of age outs in the music sections and they could have veterans from other corps audition.  Only time will show if they stay around six place or have the show/experienced talent to move up a spot or two.  The future for the whole organization looks very good.

" Can the Boston Crusaders medal in 2018" ?  I like the mere sound of this question FAR better than this time last early August when the prevailing question among national Drum Corps fans tended to be... " Can the Boston Crusaders still stay in the Top 12 here in 2016 and in 2017 " ?

I have no idea what the ceiling is for the 2018 Boston Crusaders. But the journey to find out how far they can go sure seems exciting. I personally think there are no limits to what they can potentially accomplish from here on out. Hard work, dedication, and talent can take one pretty far.

Anyone else think that this staff will be a medal contender in 2018 - 2019?  Now, granted, there will be attrition of MM's (age outs, leaving for other top 3 corps, school, money etc) but this staff assembled are top notch, and have been to the 'big show" MANY times among them.  This past years show was genius, and it not only had a theme/storyline - but it had a seamless flow (almost like SCV) where once you start listening/watching -- it's over and you are like WOW!  That's it?

There are some awesome pieces of music out there - and (no pun intended tho it certainly fits!)  they literally lit a fire under the current membership, and those who are prospective MM's in the tri-state area.  That helps retention and recruitment for sure!   I think, and it's IMHO only.... that they may stay true to their identity with the similar uniforms currently used, and go a similar route in music and design.  NO, I don't think we'll see the 'fire pit' again (all props have been sold I think) - but I think it will be powerhouse bras & perc to be sure.

Lot's of nice things said in this post. :)

A few of my own observations...

Show musical flow perfect...early on this was something I noticed from a musical standpoint long before I even knew what the visual was going to be for the corps...I got the same sense and vibe...that the show just flew right by up to the ballad...

It is my understanding that members that were part of the brass section this season (if they choose to return as a brass member) will not have to re-audition for their spot...

Moving up further at this point gets ever so more difficult, but at least from a guard stand-point (3rd place medal)...they've already proven that at least they can hang with the top 5 in guard...a lot more work to do for the staff and members to systematically whittle away at the other captions...increased content and level of difficulty should help in this regard...

The early competitive goal which I learned prior to the season start was to finish in the Top 5/6. Staff designed the show with this goal in mind...and they nailed it...this foretells well for the upcoming future...

It's tough to break into the top 3. Part of that has to do with the fact that you're trying to grab one of two available spots, the 3rd spot is basically guaranteed to go to BD

Finishing in the Top 3.. in anything... " is tough ". It starts with " the belief ". Without " the belief " nothing great is ever accomplished in anything. I think that any Corps that has aspirations to medal, or perhaps win it all in DCI knows what the exciting challenges to attempt to conquer are.

I agree..look how long SCV hovered around at 4th/5th for 5 years before this season...and they had shows that I thought were just outstanding...

To add to this:  The incredible staff was amazingly talented, collaborative, creative and had realistic expectations for last years success based on what they could bring to Boston.  They came with no real understanding what they had talent wise with the 2016 MM's.  They had assumptions and evaluated quickly and designed and progressed the show accordingly,  another talent of the design team and tech's.

In ST I heard they believed they had a top 3 guard.  As the season went on there were ups and downs and one time in particular it was a judges "down".  BUT, they ended up third as they were believed to be capable of.  This year, the design team, writers, techs,  the entire staff;  KNOWS TODAY what they have for talent and what these kids are capable of.  The kids have had a year of this staff under their belts.  Last years success is a huge recruiting tool and the talent pool I believe has to be much deeper.  I do hope they give all previous MM's the opportunity to be in the corps again without a re-audition.  That would prove that part of this experience is more than a number getting you to the top but it is to be regarded a valued MM, to stay part of what you made a commitment to.  But this staff with these kids and their experience together from last year should easily increase the design bar and the performance bar of each.

What the design/instructional staff, administration and leadership developed last year is nothing short of incredible and should be the foundation of an eventual champion and deliverers of experiences the MM's will never forget while they build a Boston Crusader legacy of their own.  I am so looking forward to what this org. and design and instructional team can create and deliver in 2018.

Let's hope you type similar sentiments this time next year with the year 2019 as your ending.

Is there a reason I won't be?  Are you preparing to be negative a year ahead of time? LOL.   I think what transpired this year gives us all a sense that the staff, knowing what they know and doing what they do best, will be more successful with an experienced group of returning MM's.   Add to that, recruits with a high talent level who come to Boston versus going to a higher placing corps will, also combine to improve the developing program.

I'm excited for not only 2018, but for every season that immediately follows. I would imagine most alums/ fans of Boston are likewise optimistic, upbeat, positive too. re. 2018.... and beyond. ... and I sure as heck know YOU are, LabMaster.
