2017 Favorite "Moments"

Recommended Posts

SCV pristine backfield "fountain" drill that dissolved into randomness, then snapped into a grid

BD's unison rifle work at the stepoff was a thrill to watch every time

Bloo tenor feature where the guys spread out 30 yards!

Every SCV tenor feature, tbh

BD unison flag work during ballad

BK brass re-entrance and storm to the end of the percussion concerto

Troopers' percussion work during tango, very tasty and musical

Cadets' church-organ finish, majestic

Crown battery feature, side 1, middle of show. Flam-o-ramic red meat for the drum nerds like me

Chord modulation to finish SCV show

The Cavaliers' immensely satisfying "my way" musical statement as battery strolled down the brass corridor

Blue Stars' final drill segment

Mandarins' red ink blot pillow people from hell

My dad did an 8 count cowbell solo to start a concert number when he marched. It was 1956 though.

For me it is various portions of Cadets (that was something regaedless of how you feel, it was SOMETHING) and that amazing Mandarins performance.  Both groups were my favovites and will be the two most watched  moving forward. At least from my side.

Blue Devils: Opening drill, entire ballad, last 45 seconds after the "diamonds in the sky" line (serious chills from the last announcer bit)

SCV: Entire show. Just an incredible program. Love the trading back and forth from the small ensemble and corps proper, and the trumpet -> baritone duet

Crown: Opening impact, percussion intensity, entire closer brass arrangement (TUBAS!)

Cavaliers: Mars My Way mashup was so #### cool

Bloo: Zombie was tiiiight

Boston: The best GE moment of the year with the burning (though I wish the witch had thrown in the corps member and escaped finals night!)

Cadets: Big percussion hit after intro

Blue Knights: use of color, fantastic brass arrangements, battery writing

Phantom: guard was incredible

Blue Stars: Love the Lana piece

Crossmen: best use of props all year, so cool

Madison: kids really got into character and bought into the show

Mandarins: drum major, guard, great GE moments throughout

Maybe not for me in terms of best GE moment. But I'll give you this: When it came out the first time - was that San Antonio? - it was very exciting. A great special effect that had a lot of us neither cheering nor applauding for a moment because we couldn't take ourselves away from watching it.

Wish there were more bigger surprises in shows in the last few weeks. (Wish there were more surprises in scores and ranking, too.) The BD window was a let down. Clowns was pretty good from Vanguard.

As props go, the BAC pyre was about as good as it gets, from the technical perspective. As a storytelling element of the show, and as GE, it struck me as kinda cheesy. I was much more engaged with the SCV discs as they folded upward behind the running guard member. Academy's cartoony tree stumps had a role to play in telling the story, and they involved the members for a greater portion of the show. Mandarins' color guard did a great job, er, drawing the pen nibs into the presentation. The pyre was an exclamation point; the discs, and tree stumps, and pen nibs were more of a storytelling tool.

To me, BAC's use of the stocks and gallows props were more effective from a GE standpoint.
