It boiled down to two things: Bus company that underbid and didn't understand what they were getting into, and an incompetent and obstinate director. DCI offered the corps a great deal of assistance, that was rebuffed by said director. I was at the show in Ft. Edwards/Glen Falls delivering sponsor cheques to some Cadets mms when the buses disappeared on Teal Sound; Dan Acheson had flown in due to the "rumblings;" he and other corps directors scrambled to get Teal mms safe places either enroute home or with other corps. Sad entirely. Either way, the NYS police had to chase the buses to retrieve the luggage of the mms and which the bus company want to hold as ransom until all bills were paid. The Staties sided with the mms. As K said, there is a lot more to Teal's issues than most folks realize including matters which will never be made public. Further research: The Glen Falls show in which Teal competed and the bus drivers abandoned the corps was June 29, 2012. The Lynn Beanpot show for which Teal did not appear was the next night June 30th in Massachusetts as posted by Tim K. Interim replacement buses were found which allowed the corps to field for a few more shows. But the holes were beginning to show as the problems became more evident. The Centerville contest on July ninth was their last as Old Soprano and Wikipedia both affirm. Great kids came out of Teal Sound, many who continued their DCI participation in wonderful ways for many corrps. It actually all boils down to just one thing; a director and board that should never have placed the kids out on the road in the first place. Everything else, the bus issue, the folding, etc... are just symptoms directly related to that single problem. That not only applies to Teal, but to Glassmen, Revo, the second incarnation of VK, ....

Glassmen folded themselves before they went on the road. The board shut the operations down when everything got out of control.

So other than a receipt, you are not due anything from them at this juncture. This sounds pretty harsh, but I agree with you. Those of us who donated did so given a very fuzzy situation and we should accept the risk that it might remain fuzzy - and for some of us, even unsatisfying. On the other hand, I also agree with the general point coming out of Tim K's comment: The director and board of a good organization ought to have offered something substantial regarding that plea for help and the response from so many donors.

Great kids came out of Teal Sound, many who continued their DCI participation in wonderful ways for many corrps. I knew the buses abandoned the kids, I never knew they took the luggage. What I do remember are the rumblings that went through the stadium at Beanpot. First we heard there was a bus breakdown , then word spread that there was an accident. There was an announcement that said Teal Sound would not apppear due to transportation issues but everyone was safe. I remember the blame game that followed when the corps folded which was ugly at best. I think looking back, the whole mess should not have been too surprising. While there have been examples on DCP and in the drum corps community of all smoke, no fire, we heard rumblings prior to the season that kids were told they had dues waived only to learn they were they were still expected to pay, discontented parents who pulled minor children out of the corps, and serious issues involving a staff member of something that happened outside the corps and that's not even getting to other rumors which may or may not be true. All in all, the whole situation is sad.

Ethically Legends would be shooting itself in the foot, and legally if you can't account how money was spent prior to the plea and afterwards, you're an investigation waiting to happen. You claim from experience that you know how non-profit works. Yet you willingly gave to them with no explanation from them other than an emotional plea; ‘now’ you are concerned about their ethics of a lack of explanation? Really? As far as them being held accountable: They are a registered 501c3; they ask for donations; they collect donations; they fill out 990’s; they report donation income; they report other revenue; they report expenditures; and that is as far as their non-profit requirement obligation goes. And if it was all done legally, that is all the IRS cares about. As for what they 'owe you' on accountability just go to Guidestar and read their 990’s; there you can hold them accountable to their revenue/expenditures. Of course it would be wise for them to go the extra step and produce yearly statements for the donors; but again, it was on you to be satisfied with their explanations ‘before’ giving them money; that is on you buddy, not them.
