Finals Format

Recommended Posts

Is it time to copy BOA so that nobody knows who is in first place going into semis and finals?  Random draw from the groups that make semis and random draw finals?  Going into Saturday you pretty much know who is going to win and roughly everyone elses final placement.  It would add more tension Friday night not knowing what groups in that 12th spot and what groups on the bubble.  Watching the BOA semifinals announcements you have everyone on the edge of their seats to see if their group made it.

won't change anything, and in fact, could hurt ticket and online viewing sales. The first times champs in 13 and 16 boosted sales, as well as the tightness of 15 and 17 helped as well

No.  Fairness is more important than enhanced mystery, and basing performance order on performance is the most fair approach.  It also gives the judges the best chance of comparing the closest corps without a lot of distractions in between.

Besides, how long are you going to hold the scores?  One show (in which case everyone still knows prelims scores going into finals and they don't change all that much) or more shows (which will annoy fans, many of whom don't even like to have recaps withheld)?

Also, I think Crown 2015 would disagree that going into Saturday you pretty much know who is going to win.

I suggest you look up DCI 1988....

Yup!  For fans, it was frustrating not to have a sense of where their favorite corps ranked.  The suspense didn't add to anyone's enjoyment.  It also must have made the judges' jobs more difficult because the random order: 1) was a change from what was being done all season, and 2) required extra diligence (on an already tough night of decisions) to balance between "leaving room" and awarding a high number/ranking, when deserved.

BOA format is not quite random...According to the adjudication guide (available here, page 10 http://www.musicforall.org/images/PDFs/2017/Fall/Rulebook/2017_Rulebook_-_FINAL.pdf) “The top 6 scoring Bands from Semi-Finals will be assigned the last 6 Performance times in numerical order according to the Finals pre-draw that took place at Band Check-In. The next 6 will be assigned the first 6 Performance times in numerical order according to the Finals pre-draw that took place at Band Check-In.” It gives some grouping order so you wouldn’t ever have BD then 12th place. Instead, it could be BAC then BD.

That top 6 bottom 6 draw type format format was also the way DCI '88 was split; and it stunk!!!
