mjoakes
Seems like a full reproduction wouldn't work. But it seems possible a show today injected with throw-back elements could be both popular and competitive.
Terri Schehr
I’m a product of the ‘70’s and I think it would get old quick. I stopped going to the alumni show at DCA because I’ve seen it all before and done better. But it’s a fun thought...
MikeRapp
I’m not sure you would be able to field a competitive guard going that route. While I grew up on traditional drum corps, there’s no argument that the quantum expansion of guard has fundamentally changed the activity. I don’t see kids ever choosing to go back to the days of marching and twirling.

Devils say, ya know what, we are gonna do 1982 One More Time show. Madison says 1988, bring it to us. How would that score today????? What judging system would you be utilizing in this hypothetical competition ? The older system ? or today's system ? Such Corps, if they did these shows with today's scoring system , doing them as you stated here.. " as originally done ".... would not finish in the top 12, imo. There would have to be modifications in the shows to score well in today's judging system. Otherwise, without any props at all in these show, all the shows would look dated by contrast. Without amplification, the brass line from the 80's. 90's would not be as loud as today's electronically enhanced volume boosters that are permitted under the judging system of today. Addidtionally, the Guards alone would get hammered under today's system. No dance. No singing. No narration. Without these things, their scores would plummet compared to the others that would be allowed to broaden their offerings. On the other hand, none of today's medalist Corps would medal under the 80's/ 90's scoring system either. For example, the 2017 DCI Champion Blue Devils most certainly would not finish in the Top 12 either and as such, not top in competition these 80's/ 90's Corps and their shows you listed from back then . Not if the 2017 Blue Devils would be scored under the 80's/ 90's DCI judging system . For illustration, BD 2017 would be disqualified in the competition right off the bat for the use of overage marchers and the use of too many performers on the field. Secondly, the use of illegal, unauthorized instrumentation, would be another disqualifyer from the participation in the competition. Timing and penalty violations would be another. The list of changes in the scoring systems over the years are plentiful that would effect these things in a major, major way. So to summarize, neither todays Corps, nor earlier decade Corps, could successfully compete under different scoring systems than what they had at the time they designed their shows, then competed with others, then followed immediately afterwards, with their scores. If BD 2017 designed a show to win using, say, 1976 rules, that show would look a lot like the 1976 Blue Devils

That does not make sense; a 2017 BD show designed to look like 1976 BD design would not 'win' in 2017. So how would it be designed to 'win'? And, pettifoggery. How is a DCI show designed to a 1976 tic judging system 'designed to win' in 2017 and the current build up judging system? That is like saying a NASCAR racing car that is designed to 1976 rules can be 'desigened to win' in 2017 NASCAR races. Again, that does not make sense.
