And yet, enough times it does (in corps) to justify trying it again....88/89 SCV, 81/82/08 Regiment (although the show concepts really WERE very different between the 80s and 08 versions), etc.

Unfortunately, that tends to lead us to 84/94 Cadets and other redos that really should've been shelved.

'Course, back in the day, repeating a chart from year to year was standard....84 was the first year BD didn't repeat a single full chart (except for the tag ending...and even THAT wasn't part of the program until we left for 2nd tour)

i dont think 84/94 need lumped together. nothing like 87/05 SCV

Meh....depends on your personal feelings on the original.  I probably feel the way I do about 94 Cadets because I went against the 84 version.

94 was good...but having to live in the shadow of 84??  In some ways, that was worse than 05 SCV, because 94 Cadets, like 84, was ALL WSS....05 SCV was only the closer.

The reason 87 Sky has always stood out as not just another WSS redo was due to the fantastic theatrical presentation.   If it had just been the music, it would not have been nearly as memorable.

Old skool with the current 150 or old 128 members? If 150 and the hornlines stay the same size with the same quality of musicians as today but put on Gs....

RE:  Jeff Molnar’s “Lowest placement in corps history” remark a few posts back...yes, that show *was* a bad idea; it shouldn’t have made the Top 10 that year IMO. On two occasions during late season I sat in front of their hornline arc during warmup and I just wanted to choke the staff.

It really depends on what is defined as "Old School."  To some that may mean the 70s, 80s, 90s, or even 2000s.  Depending on the "cutoff" the success of the show as is would vary.  Though I do believe there are some shows that given a modern visual look (to match up with today's "expectations") and slight musical arrangement tweaks, that could compete.  Imagine 1992 Blue Devils given a slightly modern twist, and melting people's faces off again with "When a Man Loves a Woman."  There are others that I believe could work as well, just might take some minor changes.

...One of the things that made BD's 2017 show SO spectacular is the beginning nod to old school drum corps...

I would bet that a majority of the fans who viewed BD's show this year didn't know the opener was an old school nod, that they thought only that they were watching something different. Heck, as someone who's had Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor echoing in his brain for more than 40 years, most of the old school elements of that show weren't obvious to me.

DCP conventional wisdom would have us believe that nothing done again could possibly be done better. That's wrong on so many levels. I, for one, will tell you Malaguena didn't peak in 1988 with Madison. But putting taste and preference aside, drum corps fans born after the tic's demise deserve to hear great charts too.
