  1. 1. In between groups' performances at a drum corps show, which do you prefer from those around you?

    • That they leave me and my group (if applicable) alone. Don't talk to me, I won't talk to you.

Agreed.  Which do you dislike more, the SUPER HOMERS, or the KNOW-IT-ALLS, or THE I'M GOING TO LIE ABOUT HAVING MARCHED DRUM CORPS (when you talk to/question them, it is obvious that they never have)?  This past year on Finals night we had a know-it-all sitting behind us, and I finally turned around and told him to shut up.  He was even talking during the shows.  The worst part is, and I know this may make me seem like the "Get off my lawn guy," mixed with a bit of elitism, but he was young (17-19 years old), and when I asked, he had never marched drum corps.  Don;t get me wrong, I've met young people who know their stuff about drum corps, even the stuff before their time, and I don't mind if someone hasn't marched, but just don't talk like you have.

I was in a CYO band in the Boston area but did not march in a drum corps, but I know tons of kids who did because the bands, drill teams, and smaller corps had a lot of kids who marched with 27th, North Star, BAC, Garfield, Bridgemen, and a few Madison. For years I had a sure fire way of discovering who did and did not march which should be a no brainer for you who have marched. Ask what corps a person marched with, say did you know do and so (a real name) then you must have known so and so (a fake name). It works. It's getting harder for me now since I do not know too many contemporary marchers but it worked like a charm years ago.

My biggest issues over the years ( besides the people yapping on cell phones during Corps performances ) are the staffers from Corps who run up the steps, plant themselves around on the 50  then start yapping or hollering when their Corps is in performance, so you can't hear a freakin thing.. sometimes they even obscure the view of the paying customer. One year, I had just about had enough, so I stood up from my seat, and told them in no uncertain terms to" shut up or leave". Apparently they got the message and apologized, and watched without saying a further peep... but its a shame they had to be TOLD this, as common courtesy and consideration for the public should have been a concern when they decided enmasse to run up the stadium steps like this and plant themselves among the audience, and start yapping way too loudly.

That said, overall, my experiences with fans in the stands over the years has been mostly pretty good and mostly positive actually... far better than sports fans at some venues anyway I've been to over the years anyway.

The show in Cranston, RI that was once held in Bristol has volunteers that do not allow drum corps staff race up to take seats they often believe are empty. These volunteers take the rules seriously and if a staff member takes a seat, they are escorted out. The seats have been sold, so they are not claiming empty seats. They also go after anyone they catch recording a show. I've said before a section should be set aside for staff and my guess is some show sponsors do reserve some seats for staff.

Last year at Indy I left my seat and came back about thirty seconds before a corps started. I knew the seat next to mine would be empty, so I sat in it. When the corps finished, the woman lectured  me about how I should have been in my seat earlier and it disturbed her. I wanted to say something, but someone said "You know your in his seat." It didn't phase her.

I don't mind some small talk. And most people I have conversations with are respectful, even if they are clearly anchored to a particular corps. A family sitting next to me at Finals this year were SCV parents and alumni. They were fun to observe.

But I also have fantasies about buying a square block of 16 tickets so that I can control all seats around me. Maybe with those theater-rope things creating my own soft border wall.

You'll still hear people on the fringes of your compound.  Don't forget to clear with the OIC of stadium security your need for a couple of enforcers  rambo emoticon   to keep others out and the couple of camera's to video the evening incase there might be future legal action by you or others.  patrolling soldier emoticon

Yaaasss, the old, "Did you know so and so, etc, etc..."  It is even better if they are a poser and a know it all, then "gently (cough cough)" correcting them, is even more fun.  I don;t see why people feel the need to "pretend" that they actually marched.  There are a plethora of great musicians who never marched drum corps, and that's all right.  Just enjoy the activity, and the other people who enjoy it as well.

My take is talk all you want between shows. Stand and cheer when something special occurs during a show. Don’t talk to me when a corps is playing unless your life is in danger.

I was a bit surprised by the posts I read. When I read the thread tittle I thought the locus was the lot and the post-performance movement of mms, did they mingle amongst themselves (like Regiment) mingle with others but not too far (like Cadets) or wherever you want as long as your duties are done and you're where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be (like Devils) and other various approaches like St. Vinnie's, the old Boston, Blessed Sac, Bayonne, Crossmen  and the Cavies.

Me, I talk with everyone...except once the corps takes the field no talking unless your water broke and the baby is crowning.
