The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps proudly announced their 2018 Brass Staff. SHANE STARTZEL - Brass Caption Head; JOE WILT - Assistant Brass Caption Head and Baritone Tech; MARK HOVER, Trumpet Tech; KIM MILLER, Mellophone Tech; RANDALL BENNETT, Tuba Tech; and DOREEN SANDOR, Brass Tech/Brass Assistant to the Caption Head.

Shane Startzel, Brass Caption Head, started teaching at Shikellamy High School. He was 2001 Brass and Visual Tech, and Brass and Visual Caption Head from 2002-2003. Shane has worked with the Victor High School Indoor Percussion Program (VIPE) from 2007 to 2011, was Visual Teach in 2007, and has been The Victor Marching Blue Devils’ Brass Music Instructor from 2008 to present. Shane has been The Skyliners’ Brass Caption head since the 2016 season.

Shane’s marching experience includes being a member of the Shikellamy High School Marching band from 1988 – 1992; The Bluecoats (DCI) from 1991 – 1992, and the Empire Statesmen (DCA) from 2003 – 2007.

Joe Wilt will be returning to the Skyliners in 2018 for his third year as Assistant Brass Caption Head. He is the second generation of a drum corps family, and began his drum corps career at age 6. Since 2010 he has been Brass Coordinator for the Webster High School Marching Band (NY), and currently plays professionally with Prime Time Brass. Joe’s previous DCA experience includes various performing, instructional, and leadership roles in the Empire Statesmen from 2009-2013, and the San Francisco Renegades from 1997-2008. He was also Founder and Co-Director of the Renegades Minicorps, winning the 2001 and 2003 DCA Championships.

Mark Hover received a Bachelors of Music degree from SUNY Fredonia (Trumpet Performance and Education) and a Masters of Music degree from Boston University (Music Education). He has been Middle School Band Director in the North Syracuse Central Schools since 2006, and is the Brass Ensemble Director. His marching experience includes playing Mellophone and Soprano with the Syracuse Brigadiers Drum & Bugle Corps from 1997 to 2000, and the Empire Statesmen from 2011 to 2013. Mark worked with the Cicero North Syracuse Northstars Marching Band and indoor groups from 2007 to 2016. A freelance trumpet player in the Syracuse area, he is currently playing with Central Winds: Music Educator Ensemble and SU Brass Ensemble. He has performed with Utica Symphony, Stan Colella Big Band, Syracuse Symphony, and Symphoria (renewed SSO).

This will be Kim Miller’s first season with The Skyliners. She is a band/music teacher at New Lebanon Elementary School in New York. Kim received her Masters Degree in Music Education from the College of St. Rose, and Bachelors of Music Education Degree from Syracuse University. She has worked with the following marching bands: Waukesha North (Waukesha, WI) Mohonasen High School (Rotterdam NY) Auburn High School (Auburn, NY), and Jordan-Elbridge High School (Jordan, NY).

Kim marched mellophone with the Syracuse Brigadiers and Empire Statesmen Drum & Bugle Corps, and the Syracuse University Marching Band. She played with the Brigadiers Alumni Corps, and spent a year on their Board of Directors. Kim has also worked on the Visual Staffs for Mohonasen and Albany indoor percussion programs.

Randall Bennett is also joining The Skyliners this season. He received his Associate of Applied Science, Music Degree from Onondaga Community College, Syracuse, New York in 2012, and his Bachelor of Science in Music Education from The College of St. Rose in 2017. His work experience includes: five years as Brass Caption Head of Pioneer Drum & Bugle Corps from Milwaukee, Wisconsin (2012 – 2017); Marching Band Brass/Visual teacher at Mohonasen High School from Rotterdam, New York (2013 – 2017) and Waukesha North High School, Waukesha, Wisconsin (2016 – 2017); and Marching Band Brass Coordinator at Baldwinsville High School, Baldwinsville, New York (2009 – 2017).

Other honors include receiving Honors Convocation and making the Dean’s List at The College of St. Rose, and being named Teaching Staff Member of the Year at Pioneer Drum Corps in 2014 and 2015.

A New York Skyliner Lifetime Member, Doreen Sandor has been on Sky’s brass staff in the 1980s, 2000s and 2010s as in-line tech, Brass Instructor, 2005 Brass Caption Head and Assistant Caption Head. Doreen played Mellophone, French Horn, and Soprano with Skyliners, and played Mellophone in Sky’s 2007 Mini-Corps and the 2011 and 2012 Alumni Corps. She has been Brass Caption Head, arranger and instructor for corps in DCA, DCI, Garden State, Nassau-Suffolk, British Youth Band Association (BYBA) and DCUK. She was on Kidsgrove Scouts’ U.S. staff in 2012, 2015 and 2017; as well as on the Company’s U. S. Staff in 2017. Doreen teaches Music in upstate New York.
