Dchristian125
Hi everyone, I was doing some research and I made an astonsihing discovery. There are new corps planning on joining DCI's open class, and a LOT of them. Here is a list of the corps: Vessel Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2018 - Orange County, CA https://www.vesseldrumcorps.org Armada Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2018 - Boise, ID http://www.armadacorps.org *Arsenal Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Albuquerque, NM https://arsenalperformingarts.org Encorps Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Brunswick, NJ http://jamwithencorps.org Rivermen Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Portland, OR https://oregonpaa.weebly.com/therivermen.html Appalachian Sound Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Atlanta, GA http://mayde-inc.org/appalachiansound/ Appalachian Gold Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Summersville, WV https://www.appalachiangold.org Hub City Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Houston, TX https://www.hubcityguardians.org Lone Star Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2019 - Fort Worth, TX http://www.lonestardbc.org Storm Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2020 - Terre Haute, IN http://indianastorm.net Florida Xpress Drum and Bugle Corps - DCI Open Class 2020 - Hawthorne, FL http://www.thefloridaxpress.org/drum--bugle-corps.html All these corps are going to contribute to the growth of DCI. As of right now, from what I know, these corps are determined to enter open class by the years that they have set. If these 11 corps are successful in joining DCI's open class, there will be a total of 57 corps competing in DCI competitions by 2020. I have listed all the corps websites and I urge you all to visit them and learn more about the organizations that will be a part of drum corps future! If you know any other organizations that are planning on joining DCI's Open Class within the next 3 years, please post them below and I will add them to the list above! *Arsenal Drum and Bugle Corps believes that maybe World Class has room in it for another corps from the Southwest. : ) 1
Jeff Ream
some big if's given that they have to pass the financial sniff tests. Since OC doesn't get the per show fees World Class does, there needs to be some solid infrastructure in place so we don't see more Legends or Revolution scenarios 1
ouooga
I hadn't heard of Vessel, but there's a lot of great staff members with that one. Looking good for them. Then again, that SoCal pool of students has to be drying up, right? 2

My son saw one reference to them on Facebook, but didn't know they were local, and no one at my town's high school appears to have been approached. It's website says "There is a demand for a new DCI Drum Corps in New Jersey. New Jersey needs another voice, a new look and sound." I'm not certain I agree that there is demand (something I looked into myself in trying to start up a corps in this same area a few years ago), or a need for another DCI corps given that they already run the competitive DCI gamut from Raiders to Surf to Cadets. A localized corps looking to perform within NJ would be good - that's what I was hoping to make - but their website seems to indicate an interest in pushing quickly into Open Class. Oh well - good luck to them - always happy to see a push for growth.
besson57
As a new resident of Albuquerque, I'm excited to see there's some drum corps activity here! Looking forward to supporting Arsenal. It will help take some of the sting out of being 10 minutes from Carolina Crown's spring training site.
Tim K
I would rather use the word "resurgence" rather than growth, because in the early days of DCI the number of then The Open Class corps was larger as was the then Class A corps. That being said, for each new corps that surfaced years ago, we probably lost two or three other competitive corps, so new corps coming on the scene without losing competitors is great. Also the quality of the Open Class corps currently competing is amazing. I did not get the opportunity to see all the Open Class corps in 2014 and 2015 so when I saw them all in 2016 I was blown away, and 2017 almost made 2016 look like the dark ages. I think when it comes to corps competing in the future, we do have to wait and see. I know of two attempts to start corps, in one case with knowledgeable people involved, and money was not the issue, it was a matter of recruitment. A great deal can happen between now and 2019 or 2020, but Guardians, Louisiana Stars, Shadow, and River City Rhythm are all examples of new OC talent and in the case of Guardians, a corps some believed would never succeed, and Southwind competing again is a great sign too.

ranintothedoor
Economy's perking up again... finally... so that's going to help. More disposable income floating around. Also, I think the SoundSport and Drumline Battle concept, while they may not be super big right now, have sparked the imagination of many corps-inspired folks by providing a safety net that, even if they miss Open Class, there's still a way to get into DCI. However they don't seem to take into account the DCA presence, also pulling many kids....Cabs, Bush, Fusion, Sun, SKy, Bucs, C2, Hurcs...for some reason i think i am forgetting someone LOL
