The public should never again be tortured with the likes of another Phantom of the Opera and Les Mis movie remake with their awful Hollywood / pop cast of performers. No matter how much money the creators of thes two musicals made, I lost a lot of respect for them for what they allowed to happen to their musicals. Absolutely atrocious. When Hollywood can't even do a good Scooby Do or Underdog remake that speaks volumes.

Think that's what MAD magazine called it's late 50s version. Guess U.N. building is on east side as it was communist leaders vs western leaders. Jerome Robbins originally envisioned the musical as being about a Jewish girl (became Maria) and an Italian/Catholic boy (Tony later on).

ironlips
".. trying to picture a rumble between those groups. " In today's NYC, I can understand that sentiment, but in the city of the 1940s and even into the '50s things weren't always so copacetic between those groups. Both were essentially immigrants, competing for jobs, housing and other resources. Parents of many of the Jewish teens were recent Eastern European refugees who had fled Nazi occupation. There was a resentment on the part of the other groups who were slightly better established and considered themselves "true" Americans. If this scenario is beginning to sound familiar, perhaps that suggests why a new West Side Story might be rather poignant right about now. "Somewhere..." One can only hope.
