July 8, 2018 vs. July 9, 2017

2018

This was one of those nights where score change varied significantly by show. All six corps in Minnesota had increases over 1.50 points while none of the corps in Florida did and only one corps in Wisconsin did. Typically, these scores adjust over the next day or two and then rankings reset. This is especially true for Mandarins and Blue Knights who fell to the bottom of the Top 12 in rankings here but will likely move back up when they are back in action.

Four corps had increases of 2.00 points or more: Crossmen (2.45), River City Rhythm (2.45), Colts (2.10), and Madison Scouts (2.05). Shadow and Legends both had decreases of over 1.00 point at 2.10 and 1.50 respectively. Bluecoats moved up into a solo hold on the #1 ranking, but with Santa Clara Vanguard not in competition, this is not significant. What is significant is the head-to-head tie between Boston Crusaders and Carolina Crown. With caption victories over Bluecoats as well, Boston Crusaders is making a case for medal contention.

Last Night's Storylines:

  • The most interesting set of match-ups are in Orlando where Bluecoats (#1), Carolina Crown (#4), Boston Crusaders (#5), and The Cadets (#7) are all head-to-head. Within this group, Boston Crusaders moved to within 0.450 points of Carolina Crown last night. The last time Boston Crusaders beat Carolina Crown was July 19, 2006. Boston Crusaders and Carolina Crown tied on the night. Boston was carried by percussion and color guard, which beat both Bluecoats and Carolina Crown. The corps do not meet up again until July 15 in St. Louis.
  • Can Crossmen retake its lead over Blue Stars? Crossmen narrowed the gap to 0.200 but Blue Stars remained on top.
  • Heat Wave makes its season debut at #38.

Tonight's Storylines:

  • Oregon Crusaders and Pacific Crest have each taken one head-to-head match-up. Which corps breaks the tie?

2017

All corps in the California show saw a decrease in score while only one corps in another show (Music City) decreased. Shadow put up the largest score increase (2.20) and moved up in the rankings the furthest (#41 to #39). Blue Devils C decreased the furthest in ranking (#38 to #41). These changes may be directly related to the fact that scores at one show went down.

Bluecoats and Santa Clara Vanguard were the only two of the Top 6 in action. Both corps put up score increases, but Bluecoats' increase of 1.700 was enough to move up into #3. The top 4 are all now in the 81.00-81.90 range.

Thank you! I just caught that as I worked on the 13th but don't want to reset all the flags to fix it. Appreciate it.

July 9, 2018 vs. July 10, 2017

2018

Just one show with no placement changes in head-to-head competition. The Battalion and Columbians continue to trade victories in Open Class with Columbians now holding a 2-1 edge with two competitions to go.

Last Night's Storylines:

  • Oregon Crusaders and Pacific Crest have each taken one head-to-head match-up. Which corps breaks the tie? Pacific Crest takes this one although the gap has closed by 0.60 points.

Tonight's Storylines:

  • Mandarins returns to competition for the first time since July 6 in a new region of the country. Based on previous scores on the West Coast, the head-to-head match-up with Blue Stars should be most compelling. Colts are also surging though so the match-up there might also be interesting. The difference is a solid place in the top 12 or a spot on the edge of making finals.
  • The final three corps are making their season debuts: Guardians, Louisiana Stars, Southwind.

2017

Just two shows and no movement among corps that were head to head. The biggest score increase went to Oregon Crusaders (2.250) with no decreases although Blue Devils stayed exactly even with their previous score.

The trend continued in Florida with the #5 corps (The Cavaliers) and the #7 corps (Boston Crusaders) increasing their scores by a greater amount than the #6 corps (The Cadets). On 7/7, The Cadets trailed The Cavaliers by just 0.20; now it is 1.950. Boston Crusaders trailed The Cadets by 2.25; now it is 0.80.

#27-#29 stayed the same in terms of placement and Jersey Surf's improvement moved it up ahead of this group a little further.

July 10, 2018 vs. July 11, 2017

2018

Mandarins (+4.30) and Jersey Surf (+4.20) led the way in terms of score increase; this lined up with ranking changes as well with Mandarins improving from #12 to #8 and Jersey Surf improving from #28 to #25. Three corps had score decreases with Columbians falling the most (-0.40).

Last Night's Storylines:

  • Mandarins returns to competition for the first time since July 6 in a new region of the country. Based on previous scores on the West Coast, the head-to-head match-up with Blue Stars should be most compelling. Colts are also surging though so the match-up there might also be interesting. The difference is a solid place in the top 12 or a spot on the edge of making finals. Mandarins defeated Blue Stars by 0.80 and moved up to the #8 ranking. Based on previous head-to-head match-ups among the other corps, this puts Mandarins in solid footing for a run at a finalist spot.
  • The final three corps are making their season debuts: Guardians, Louisiana Stars, Southwind. They debuted at: #30 - Louisiana Stars, #33 Guardians, #35 Southwind.

Tonight's Storylines:

  • Blue Stars, Crossmen, and Mandarins face-off in head-to-head-to-head competition.
  • The Battalion and Columbians have each won two of their match-ups. Tonight is the final competition for Columbians. Who will end up on top of the season battle?

2017

Pacific Crest put up the biggest score increase (2.500) which gave them a three place jump from #20 to #17. No corps decreased in score. Bluecoats had the smallest increase of the night at 0.350.

Last night's storylines:

  • In separate shows, Blue Devils posted the higher score over Bluecoats. Carolina Crown has not competed since July 8.
  • Blue Stars continued to open space between them and Crossmen behind them, improving by 1.500 with Crossmen improving by 1.150 in head to head competition.
  • In their first head to head competition with Seattle Cascades Oregon Crusaders, Pacific Crest made a statement by not only beating the Cascades by 1.900 points after being just 0.500 ahead in non-head to head ranking but by surpassing Oregon Crusaders as well.
  • Columbians extended its lead on The Battalion.
