@BRASSO They keep coming :rolleyes:

1980 Troopers 13th, Freelancers 19th

1981 Troopers 12th, Freelancers 11th

I think anything before 1984 is not really comparable in @BRASSO point...

Trickle down versus percolate up...

1978 Guardsmen 11th, North Star 10th, Bridgemen 5th

 There used to be lots of placement  movement up and down from one season to the next in the early years of DCI.. ( as you demonstrated here too )

2001 Magic of Orlando (Did not compete at Finals), Seattle Cascades (2nd D2, 17th D1)

2002 Magic of Orlando 11th, Seattle Cascades 12th

There were actually THREE finalists in 2002 that weren't in finals the previous year. Spirit went from 13th in 2001 to 10th in 2002.

Another factor I haven’t seen mentioned yet...

While they * are * an “OC” corps on paper (which has been discussed ad nauseum), IMO SCVC cannot be excluded from the 15th place discussion...2017 saw them end up in 16th 1.91 behind the 15th place Colts, and VC took 15th and 16th in all but two captions. They have  a number of 3 year (or up) vets and a solid amount of kids in their 2nd year at VC. A good handful of those kids went toe-to-toe with monster players at the January callback auditions for the A-Corps; while none made it, they nonetheless brought back the “here’s what it takes” experience to the rest of the Cadet corps. They are VERY focused on repeating in OC, AND THEN SOME. My kid was telling me he informally lobbied the brass staff to put the extra 3 members the new rules allowed plus pull some bodies from the CG count to boost the hornline to 82-84 (up from 72) so they could “REALLY go after them” (the extra 3 eventually went into the CG.)

The number of corps for Finals is set-up for a reason. Finals should be truly the elite corps. Competition is fierce all over, which is absolutely wonderful.

Glad that we fans get to enjoy the higher quality shows all around.

Also finalist corps split the finals gate  sales. So that would dilute the money pool.

Yep. When your sponsor (WXIA-TV) opens up the checkbook and tells you to hire the best available, you hire Ott and Float. There was a reason that some corps referred to us at times in 1978 as $pirit of Atlanta. :)  (Sure did hurt, though, a couple of years later when the TV station got bought out and the new owners nixed the cashflow.)
