Yea I did the same showed the wife the painting but how many folks over the summer that see them are going to be familiar with the painting. Guess it's just the judges that matter.

i don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but it's worth noting that Mandarins HANDILY beat BK in visual. Don't get me wrong, I know that's BK's weakness and that this would be a different story if we were talking about BK's searing, drool-inducing hornline, but still....Mandarins just behind last year's 8th place corps, who is also starting incredibly strong, and solidly over them in a full caption and 5/6 visual sub captions. I mean...Jesus. Mandarins clearly intend to prove that they want to become a mainstay of the Saturday night show. Couldn't be happier for the season this corps is having.

Well we must of had a earthquake last night.  Jones and Stone had SCV up! Imagine that!.  Not sure what planet Chumley was on but hope fully he will see the light and lose his blue team bias!  It was apparent that BD had some issues with there samples last night in addition to some of the unfinished transitions that they continue to get awarded for.  Come on judges, the spread should not have been this close with obvious unfinished sections of the BD show.  Not sure how Soloman could have BD content over SCV in color guard, I guess those world class hair flips are worth a lot.

Would luv to know just how much that SLOWLY rotating stage cost and how that got rolled down to the member fees for Mandarins.

Yep -- no idea about the painting.

I DID understand the Fellini show a while back as I had recently worked doing music for a 48-Hour Film competition and our director wanted a Fellini homage. I got a lot of the references that many persons not well versed in Fellini may have missed.

Not saying good or bad as far as show concepts, but there can be accessibility issues. Even then, just sit back and enjoy the music.

It’s kinda hard to claim accessibility issues about one of the most recognizable paintings in American culture, honestly... Especially in an arts acitivity. No one should feel bad for not knowing it — and this is a great chance to learn! — but not knowing it doesn’t make it obscure.

I think SCV is the best this year. That show is incredible. I really get the sense of the whole concept. I really thought they were last year too but BD had the emotional thing in their back pocket which the ballad this year I feel the same but SCV just has the Babylon idea down. I really do like their whole trance dance thing or what ever. It is a very futuristic show. So glad I traveled up to Sac to watch them live.

The Mandarins tour fees are less than Vanguards tour fees.

I do not believe there are biased judges.

That is all

Maybe not for this show but if anything the tour fees are justified by the members through performance guidance and instructions from the staff and input from the judges. Then dci steps in and reduces the judging panel at some shows, do the members get a rebate does the reduced cost for the show get passed along in performance fees or does the parent organization just pocket the money? Another example of dci being just a large mansplaining organization that answers to no one and does not really care if the corps get an equal amount of input early in the season or at any time for that matter.

The tour fees are justified through instruction, providing instruments/equipment, housing, food, and transportation from mid-May through mid-August. Tour fees alone don't cover the corps' actual cost for each member for one season in a drum corps.

Recognizable by sight maybe, but not everyone knows it by name. I'm not particularly a fan of 20th century painting, so while I recall having probably seen that artwork at some point in my past, I wouldn't have been able to put a title or artist to it.

Most recognizable paintings in American culture?  Try American Gothic, Campbell Soup can, or Norman Rockwell.

What corps had American Gothic in their show one year? I am sure I remember this happening...
