GE is entirely subjective, and it isn't always about GE. BD won 2015 finals while placing 3rd in GE, so it can be done.

BD was 2nd in GE on Finals night, 1st in GE Visual & 3rd in GE Music.

That was the only time in the past 17 years that the Champion did not win GE.

So it IS all about GE.

All it takes is one time to prove it can be done. But, yes, whomever wins GE usually wins, but they also usually win other captions as well. So GE can play a big part, but it's not everything.

Not the only time, BD won GE on finals night in 2008, but Phantom took gold. But your point still stands, GE is a very good indicator of who will win it all.
