East St. Louis is bad. But if you stay around the JJK Center it is survivable. There's a decent casino there too. But, as a guy who doesn't gamble,I'd avoid the whole stretch between Madison and Cahokia unless you've got reason to be there.

If you've never been to St. Louis I would recommend trying Imo's Pizza. It's really unique and (I think) delicious. Super thin crust with yummy provel cheese. And if you like frozen custard then you should really swing by Ted Drewes. Both of these places are as St. Louis as The Arch and The Cardinals.

I just read an article in the St Louis Post Dispatch stating "the best bands from all around the midwest will be competing in this event" ... well crap, I thought it was a drum corps show with the best corps from around the country.  Sorry, Blue Devils, I guess you can't come.

I do not believe in using band in a disparaging way, as often happens, but I do believe in the importance of distinctions. Soccer, football, basketball, baseball, rugby, are all sports and somehow use balls, but each is distinctive. Would a newspaper simply say there is a ball game to describe an athletic event?

When it comes to drum corps, we need to get out the message of how hard the kids work, how elaborate the shows have become, the try outs, the travel involved, etc. and what makes it district. Do I recommend letters to the editor and protests? No, but we should not be afraid of what makes the activity different and all that makes it amazing.

Enough of my rant, on to predictions and discussions!

Worth mentioning that STL will have the first full-scale regional judging panel of the season, including the premiere of the brand-new second Music Analysis judge.
