Now for my honest answer - I think the composers/arrangers/transcribers giving you that advice simply do not have the same mental/aural stamina that judges do.

Personally, a long day of listening just gets me further into the zone for hearing the finer nuances.

I find the advice about getting an early start works for me.

I'm counting 3 green shirts on the field. My assumption is brass, percussion, and color guard. Yes?

 Yup crossmen, so impressive

I thought it was Xmen but some of last night was a blur after all day watching...hah.  I vaguely remembered her doing a courtesy type dip to get it and doing a twirl of the umbrella to distract the eye as she made the grab.  And that quick, it was all done.

Field Percussion, 2 Visual judges (marching and maneuvering)

Guard/Brass/Other percussion in press box
