2019 Phantom Regiment

I agree. It seems any time someone is being honest and critical they are declared negative by the masses. I would love the opportunity to sit face-to-face with Madison and Regiment's entire teams and tell them to their faces that they need a kick in the pants. Let's be real, I wouldn't be qualified to take any staff position on Blue Devils C, but I would have had the sense to where I on Madison's staff to speak out that the narration and prop last year were total garbage, and were I on Regiment's that the drill, guard book, music book, props and entire visual production was a big huge mess. Why are these qualified and capable designers incapable of reaching such conclusions? It's baffling.

I live right down the road from Rockford and Madison is just a bit further up the road.  I would love to see them have success.  But I have to call ‘em like I see ‘em.

As baffling is how most of the 2018 designers were invited back!

I'm intrigued by the addition of a Vegas production designer. But as I understand it, his literal first drum corps experience was watching finals week in Indy last year! (!!!) That's risky af.

You're definitely right, but #### maybe being risky is what Phantom needs to get things going.

I was at a drum corps party last week. We were watching the BluRays in reverse order. When we watched Crossmen, I remarked, “When did Crossmen become Phantom Regiment?”

When we watched PR, I said, “When did PR become Crossmen?”

I think that sums up how I feel.

I’d hardly call the staff choices and music choices thus far for 2019 being risky. Doing Gershwin in 2005, that was risky based on past shows, but what they’re doing currently, seems more like hitting the panic button.

I did say something about the guard costumes that were the same color as the turf and those ladder things last year.

Yes, this too. It's like, "Hey Dummies, pay attention." I just don't get it.

I don't know how they are invited back either, but I imagine a lot of it has to do with the budget. I just don't think corps like Regiment and Madison have the funds to fill their ranks with staff that's the caliber of BD, SCV and Bluecoats (to name a few). They have to make do with what they have got, but I still don't understand how we "know littles" can point out things that are so obviously being missed by the "know a lots."

I don't agree. Bringing on someone who has no experience is probably not going to work out in your favor. They don't have to be risky, they have to be smart. We all see what succeeds in today's drum corps. It's not rocket science. When you look at corps like the 2016 and 2017 Cavaliers and 2017 Boston Crusaders - we have corps that out placed several other corps that perhaps had more talent in their ranks based on design alone. Those three shows were so well designed (and I'd add 2018 BAC, too). That's what Regiment needs to figure out - immulating the top corps while somehow staying true to themselves. That's what's hard to figure out, but constantly rehashing pieces you've played in the past is a poor start right there.

I agree with this. They were risky in 2004 and 2005. When I watch Crown today and Bluecoats today, I think this should be Regiment and Madison. They've both failed at modernizing without losing their identity. Madison has modernized and lost their identity, Regiment has just failed to modernize. I don't know what's worse.

What a second.  Bringing in someone with live show experience can be a great thing.  Their problems have NOTHING to do with "modernization".  If you don't have a show with a strong core AKA music everything else just will fail.  The hoodie thing was just meh.  Now, they do an Assassin's Creed show...hmm?  :)  Better yet lets do Game of Thrones!  They like death well let me tell you..... :)
