This isn't the NFL where you fire a coach for going 9-7. You want to get rid of a 30 year old (+/- a year or two) caption head for giving you a top 6 color guard in DCI two years in a row?

Absolutely, when the content in CG ranked 8th, achievement 6th, and overall CG 7th, in a year when the corps played 4th (3 places higher than color guard).

I generally pick the best conductor who wins this award.

It’s the Jim Jones “leadership” award, not the Jimmy Russo “showmanship” award.

This year wasn’t a CG staff issue. It was the talent level coming in to camp. You tell based on where they got to by finals compared to the early season struggles.

it's mostly personal relationships and connections from where they teach/design in the winter IMO

And in prelims they were 6th and semis they were 5th... let’s fire the Bluecoats percussion staff while we’re at it

As others have mentioned, it is a leadership award. It’s wonderful for all of us to applaud and praise Cadets for their fine performances, hard work, grit, etc. we forget that it’s not about picking up instruments and giving it your all. Momentum had to be kept up all season. Morale had to be low at many moments. Down days had the potential to be worse for Cadets. Illnesses which can spread with a vengeance but for Cadets, it was probably a “what else can go wrong?” Keeping Cadets on track and upbeat was a huge job, and off the field the drum major is expected to play a huge role in this effort.

Example is a video of Samuel leading Bluecoats in 2016/2017 in song after a long/frustrating/hot rehearsal day in Arkansas.  Samuel pulled the group together in an effort to re-energize them.

Thanks for saving me the video find time.  That was truly one of the greatest fun moments.  People who skip open class and the lower half of semis miss out on a lot of good shows and fun times.

In Semis he even moon-walked a little.

Yep when Michael Townsend and friends moved to Boston, a large portion of crownguard got on the stagecoach and became witches in Boston (including many soloists).

Whatever happened to Herbert Washington?

So that’s where Helen ended up?!!

Dang, one of the all time great Crown props ever.

Low miles, and only driven by a little ‘ole drum corps one season...

Agreed that BC percussion staff should be replaced, if due to poor design outside of what some have concluded is not really poor design, but rather alignment with the show’s jazz theme.

Organizations should focus on improving the weakest parts of their organizations.  Sometimes that means leadership changes.

Sometimes people get positions based on past results.  Once they begin to slip, regardless of past success, changes are sometimes needed.

In the words of Parker in the movie ALIEN, "Spit on it for two minutes...would ya'...for Christ sake!"

Better just nuke it from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
