2018 Caption winners...

Recommended Posts

The guard and brass captions are very tight this year. Percussion is basically set in stone already. But here is how it currently stands for the top 2 corps in those captions...

George Zingali Best Color Guard Award

1st) Boston Crusaders

2nd) Blue Devils

Scenarios for finals:

Boston loses to BD by less than 0.1 pts, ties, or beats BD by any margin: Boston wins the caption

BD beats Boston by more than 0.1 pts: BD wins the caption

Jim Ott Best Brass Performance Award

1st) Santa Clara Vanguard

2nd) Carolina Crown

Scenarios for finals:

SCV loses to Crown by less than 0.1 pts, ties, or beats Crown by any margin: SCV wins the caption

Crown beats SCV by more than 0.1 pts: Crown wins the caption

Fred Sanford Best Percussion Performance Award

1st) Santa Clara Vanguard

2nd) Blue Devils

Scenarios for finals:

SCV loses to BD by less than 0.4 pts, ties, or beats BD by any margin: SCV wins the caption

BD beats SCV by more than 0.4 pts: BD wins the caption

Donald Angelica Best General Effect Award

1st) Santa Clara Vanguard

2nd) Bluecoats

Scenarios for finals:

SCV loses to Bluecoats by less than 0.875 pts, ties, or beats Bluecoats by any margin: SCV wins the caption

Bluecoats beats SCV by more than 0.875 pts: Bluecoats wins the caption

John Brazale Best Visual Performance Award

1st) Santa Clara Vanguard

2nd) Blue Devils

Scenarios for finals:

SCV loses to BD by less than 0.4 pts, ties, or beats BD by any margin: SCV wins the caption

BD beats SCV by more than 0.4 pts: BD wins the caption

BD is 2nd in guard at the moment.  19.3 average vs. 19.2 average.  SCV has a 19.08 average.

You caught it before I could edit it, my mistake

Wow. If SCV wins the Ott tonight, that will be the first time EVER to solely win High Brass. Their 2 awards were shared ('84/'87). Here's a poser: which corps finished the lowest but still won a competitive caption award? (Spirit was 10th in '87 and won guard - not part of the 100 pts.)

I think it's the '82 Bridgemen. 8th place corps, high Percussion.

Well, as many folks remember, Oakland Crusaders won drums in Prelims in 1977 but the corps did not make Finals. BD won drums in Finals that year. Probably the right call on '82 Bridgemen. It would have to be in the tick system. Lowest placement in the "modern" (non-tick) era for a caption winner I think is 2010 Phantom Regiment (won the Sanford but finished 6th).

What if Crown goes all out to win Brass, but visual is compromised. And Boston takes fourth place.
