Cadets get tons of mello prospects each off season

yes, however there has been a new emphasis on the mellophone in the 2018 season across the finalists; the trick is to draw the best mellophonists and french hornists. After 2014 and 2015 French horn choirs who knows what new presentations we may expect in 2019

Go back through the shows in 2018: SCV had wonderful mellophone work; BD featured two concert French horns down front on side two; Blue had their mellophone feature during the beginning of the show as their full mid voice section did their runs from the chair rungs on side one front. Of course there is Crown. Boston not so much but it definitely was there; Cavies too. Blue Stars, Blue Knights and Crossmen as well. It's no longer the case of what to do with the extra trumpeters these past few seasons. Barbara Maroney and Bonnie Ott set the standards. Several corps have given us classics over the years. The run for the good talent is not without limits. Each of the above corps will at least seek to match the talent on this instrument which was shown in '18. Cadets will really need to recruit on this instrument as they work to deepen the other brass voices as well.

Cadets seem to have always been a great place to go to as a mellophone player

And it's no wonder they made Finals. And this season only 26. I'd say they're the odds on favorites to make Finals again, against anyone else below them. We'll see if they can use this momentum to retain veteran membership. Something I was hoping Academy could have done.

Lots of momentum going from this season to next. Mandarins, Boston jumping higher than ever before, SCV looking capable of winning it again, Cadets standing their ground despite, Blue Stars back in 8th, and Spirit knocking on the door. Pun intended.

I wonder if anyone has ever made finals for the first time better than 10th. Or better than 88.15.

Probably back in the 70s when DCI was new and much less precedent to set.

Boston made finals for the first time in 1999 and came in 9th.  Their score was 88.6 and they came in 5th in 2000.

Ya, missed that those numbers were 2017. Watched them while driving tour in 2017 and thought they would be finalists. Do think they are in a good geographical position to attract and retain members now..
