Are they written on the same staff as the overall part (i.e. a solo played by a member of the trumpet 1 section would be on the trumpet 1 staff, marked "solo") or are they written separately? Edit: Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I couldn't find an arranging/writing forum and this seemed like the closest thing to the right place. For the most part: written separately, especially if it's a long solo and/or if you have the similar instruments playing in the background.
