When the crowd doesn’t get your show concept, it is now almost impossible to win a medal.

Careful.  You’re close to speaking for the audience.( a DCP mortal sin!). Anyway the audience response to Crown so far seems to have been very positive.    So your premise may be flawed.

BD 2010. Didn't get it. It won gold. I still love it.

Almost.

Also, I think the activity has changed a ton since then. Namely, Bluecoats. And SCV has taken an entirely new direction. Technical execution is still hugely important, but if you don’t have a show, it’s becoming really hard to win a medal.

So your premise is based on about 5 years' worth of results? (2014-2019)

There’s a long list of examples.  Anyway the only audience that matters is the judges ( and they’re quick to tell you so).

If that was the case, we wouldn’t sell tickets. I understand what you’re saying, but fact is that general effect has a lot to do with whether or not people get the show. Saying that the audience has no impact on scoring is naïve.

Well, SCV might come pretty close this year to disproving your statement.

I would love for Dan Potter to do an "Ask the Audience" bit over what certain shows are about. I'd bet wed get some pretty interesting answers haha

That would be such a great idea. The shows almost need a "Program" to understand them. That's why I love Blue Devils "Inside BD 360", "Conversations" and Santa Clara's "From The Field" because they take the time to explain their show concepts in depth.
