Star United

Hmm, now we're slightly behind schedule again.

Show is titled "Russian Images".

Trumpet and baritone duet to start and then the rest of the corps, who'd been waiting in the wings, join in. A little bobble there in the mid-brass. Three percussion at rear. Drill onto the stage into a chevron. I ought to know this fast paced piece but I don't. Then a slower passage. Lush. Tchaikovsky-ish but probably other.

(Best drum corps show title ever: their "I Like Tchaik" in 2012.)

OK, this is the Russian Christmas or Easter Music or whatever that item is. It's not really Russian, is it?

Anyway big full sound on rich parts including some tricky runs. But maybe not at the level of some of their past performances?

Concert euphonium and then a French horn on one of the "Pictures at an Exhibition" movements. The "Hut" one? I played it not long ago. The tuba part was the same note on almost the exact same rhythm forever. French horn soloist loses breath at the end.

OK, next movement. Louder and faster from "Pictures".

And now "Great Gate", which they start playing to the rear before a big turn and advance. But no! that's not the end. Now a horn-euph-tuba trio very pretty up front. And back to GG soft and high in the trumpets.

Doesn't someone need to be levitating on a broomstick here?

Wow! Sustain! But maybe a little too harsh before the end?

OK, a bit hard to call since I don't know if Freelancers fell apart in the middle of their show, but...

I'm going to risk the call. This is my prediction / preference:

1. Freelancers

2. Star United

3. Brig Juice

4. Sine Wave Brass

5. Bridgemen Brass

6. Govenaires

7. Warriors

8. Tri-Valley Brass

I am not going to post the results of all the I&E awards as they announced.

Although the best flugel/French score was much lower than the best trumpet score.

It is nice that they're announcing all these, though.

I thought the Cabs preferred to pronounce their name as "CabaLeros" rather than the Spanish "CabaYeros". No?

I notice that some corps seem to have no I&E participants (e.g. Buccaneers, AtlantaCV, Cadets2), and also that some I&E participants are attached to corps who aren't otherwise at championships (e.g. Excelsior, Appleknockers, Florida Brass, Cadre).
