Though I have never been to Michigan City, I’d hate to see it go. I have been told I’m missing a great experience but it does not attract a huge crowd. I would go, but it’s not the most convenient location. A person I sat with a few years back believes having it closer to Indy would be a better idea...changing the location and the number of finalists would not be a problem.

The directors themselves voted to have the show in Michigan City, and having been there every year, it fills the stadium with a quite supportive audience that embraces the members. I've been at the "big" stadium the years Division II/III (Open Class) Prelims/Finals have been held there and it was sad to see so few fans come out. The year The Academy won there were less than 500 people in the stands of the large stadium, and that was even with DCI providing free admittance by showing a World Class Finals ticket. I speak to Open Class directors every year at the Michigan City show, and they love having their own championship there. Having it closer to Indy would not be beneficial in any way I can imagine.

It’s interesting you say that, because I’ve heard the opposite, but I’ve learned over the years you don’t speak without the facts, figures, and sources to back up your points.

My conspiracy theory is that because of BDB and SCVC dominance, DCI has requested they don't attend Open Class Finals. By not attending, it may garner more support and attention for the other Open Class Corps as they haven't broke top 2 for close to a decade. Financials are the cover story.

I do think a result of this is a higher number of auditions for the other Open Class Corps in CA that tour (Gold, Golden Empire).

I think it’s a return of the corps original mission for both. Why are kids aging out of feeder corps? Why is there a disconnect between the groups in each?

The original mission was to feed kids directly into the A corps.  I doubt that staying in California is going to bring either of these groups any closer to that mission.

Well, as I said a few hours ago in the other thread, when we only knew SCVC would be curtailing out of state travel, I hope DCI streams the west coast Open Class championships next year, and regardless of the real reason for today's news, I wonder if perhaps long term it might encourage more corps to start-up if there are two O.C. touring options to choose from, one in the west and one in the east and midwest.

while what you say is true in one perspective, California corps have the most generous of potential fundraising abilities given the Bingo and tax laws there, resources that other States do not give the local corps. I realize that crossing State lines has ramifications: legally, financially, and generating popularity among volunteers and fans among them. As many others have said, some blatantly, it may not be tour costs which are generating the financial squeeze for either organization.  I do agree with you that championships should be rotated around the nation to grow the fan base and allegiance.

Bingo isn't really the big opportunity people think it is anymore. If you have a bingo operation already you're in a good place, but in Southern California breaking into bingo is near impossible due to the popularity of the casinos. Most local bingo operations in SoCal have shut down, including church and other community locations, simply because the casinos are able to offer more to their customers in a space. Why go to the local bingo hall, when you can go to the casino for meals, drinks, bingo, and some slots before and after....

Sounds like the West is now mimicking the East and New England.

Whether called Bingo, Beano, or lottery, the local charities had to bail after first being forced to put in a lot of anti-smoke deterrents before smoking was outlawed totally, and then losing the bulk of the remainder to Indian casinos, Atlantic City and other full time operations of that sort.

I do remember the crowd on Madison being big in 02 because they did a buy one get one ad in the paper

Not so sure about that. How many really went up?
