Regiment Ramblings (What If?)

It's all about megaprops/megatarps and using megaprops/megatarps effectively right now.

Sadly, having a design staff that's good with those is what's required for top 5 now.  Monkey bars ain't gonna cut it.

Funny, Vanguard won and had a cymbal line.

Remember that Phailing Phantom thread? Starting to look like that.

Patternwise since Spartacus every winnwe other than BD has fallen out of medal contention the following year and has not won again since.  I really think SCV had the pendulum momentum and they were able to top it off in 2018 with staffing and design that just happened to be remenescent of Spartacus. Really fantastic shows on SCVs part since 2014 though.  Keep in mind SCV has spent some time in the bottom half of the top 12 before rising again too. SCV seems to be a lot stronger in pit percussion while phantom in brass up until recently when phantom fell.

So many great brass moments in 2018...the show just wasn't there. Phantom is still Phantom and I agree that with a better design and pit writing team they could climb significantly... maybe even compete with Cavies.

Phantom got locked into a certain style of show for a long time....and then the game changed. players changed, but if results didnt live up to expectations, new players came in. Phantom needs to unburden themselves of trying to maintain the tradition of Phantom shows past, and design for what is working today. In addition, the competition at the top is much stronger than ever. The days of Phantom being somewhere 2-6 are over...ask Madison who has slid even further down. The emergence of Bluecoats, Crown and now Boston, plus the resurgence of the Cavies has made it super tight at the top, and you know Cadets are itching to break back up into that level with all of the recent developments and personnel changes.

PR needs to continue to embrace its long running classical style.  That's what makes them unique, interesting and popular.  There is no value in all corps using the same or similar musical & visual style(s).  Immagine how mono-tone (boring) it would be if all corps performed a variation of a common style.  We are already getting a similar effect with the use of electronic instruments and amplification.  The sound quality they produce is so unnatural off-tone compared to the pure and natural sounds of brass and percussion, which is the primary attribute (main draw) to drum corps.

we have more variety in musical choices the last 3/4 years than we had from 1994-2010. The key isn't what they play, but how they arrange it and design it.

Unique doesn't get scores.  Maybe you meant they are sneaking up on division 2.

Phantom has beat the old tunes to death.  It's time the move to modern classical.  They also need to get away from the writers writing for themselves and start writing for the corp.  Bring back the power and beauty that is Phantom.  If they did that I'd be ok with Park and blow...Even though they are much more capable.  The only time you hear talk about Phantom are the whispers in the crowd saying "what happened?"

To repeat: it's not what you do; it's how you do it. Old, by itself, is not disqualifying. A repeat, by itself, is not disqualifying.

IMHO,  you could not be more wrong

I quite enjoyed their 2005 show, which included music I never thought at the time I would see PR doing. It would be interesting to see them move in a similar direction.

IMHO you are severely mistaken.  The problem has everything to do with the music and the way it has been arranged IMHO.  Pretty much ANYTHING can be done well if it's arranged well.  Crown has pretty much proved this point.  I would worry less about props, costumes, sex of the guard and worry about arranging music that made for drum and bugle corps and not some BOA program somewhere.  EVERYTHING hinges on the music and IMHO this is where Regiment needs to start soul searching and get their sound back.  Everything else will fall in place.
